John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

We shall see. My bets are the teleprompter beats Obama in the debate.

I STILL wish someone else was the Republicrat nominee, but I HAVE to hand it to him - Mr. McCain KNOWS how to run a campaign.

Completely concur. Given the difficult political environment and how well McCain is executing therein, I am also starting to wonder if we were all wrong in 2000 in choosing Bush over McCain.

For example, it appears that McCain wouldn't be stupid enough to leave a DUI out there for the final weekend for the Gore folks to exploit which, not only nearly cost Bush the presidency, but led to a 50-50 Senate disaster as well.

The real reason that the MSM is furious with McCain: they didn't realize that he wants to be President. They expected him to roll over like Dole.

There are two ways it can work.

Touchdown or nothing. It is like that Ohio State game against Purdue in 2002. 4th and 1. Krenzel drops back, touchdown, touchdown MICHAEL JENKINS !..

lol

[Those two suspend things, while Sarah and Biden do the campaigning. Joe can tell us how President Ulysses S. Grant used to write speeches on his Blackberry during the Civil War.]

LOL.

Even better; McCain, Obama, Biden all go back to D.C. leaving Sarah on the campaign trail...it becomes evident that she is the real outsider and the only one who has no part in this mess!

McCain has put Obama in a box. He cannot refuse to suspend the debates without seeming to put his being elected before the welfare of an entire Nation and all its people.

It is a bold and brilliant move and leaves Obama no choice but to acquiesce and by doing so look like a follower instead of a leader.l

I admit I am stunned by foresight that has been exhibited in the thinking behind this move.

"Major Garrett just reported that Obama called Mccain at 8:30 am EDT today and said lets get together and issue a joint statement on this critical financial problem facing America."

Now why would Obama call McCain to issue a joint statement? It just doesn't jive, especially after Obama and Biden have been hitting McCain hard on the economy. I think their claims are BS.

He is in the Senate. He cannot do that.

Obama cannot let the senate do their job, while he is a Sitting Senator himself.

a Brilliant move by McCain.

Per Yahoo.com, here is the title of the AP article on this development:

"McCain seeks to delay debate to focus on economy "

I really, really, really like the idea of sending in Palin if Obama insists on not canceling the debate.

Major Garrett just reported that Obama called Mccain at 8:30 am EDT today and said lets get together and issue a joint statement on this critical financial problem facing America.

Which underscores the fact that Obama talks and McCain is acts.

RE: “This is great strategery. McCain can demonstrate his bipartisan bona fides. If Obama and Biden come back to DC, fine — the issue is essentially neutralized. But if Obama and Biden refuse to come back — while both are drawing a taxpayer salary — it provides significant ammunition for attack ads.”

PERFECT post — I see this as no stunt on McCain’s part —It’s “Country First.” I’ve been wondering why these campaigners had not returned to the Senate ALREADY to do their jobs considering the severity of the financial problems facing this nation today!

Let me see, Obama has been rising in the polls due to the economic crisis which typically favors the Democrats and McCain has an opportunity to change the subject to foreign affairs, a topic that favors Republicans and especially him, with the debate Friday, and he decides to focus and bring more attention to himself and the economy.

Not smart in my opion.

The first thing I thought when I saw the headline was that McCain must have seen the latest internal polls and it must have looked real bad for him.
