NEW YORK (CBS) ― Already under fire for his tax troubles, Manhattan Congressman Charles Rangel really put his foot in his mouth on Friday.
In a CBS 2 HD exclusive interview Rep. Rangel called Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin "disabled."
The question was simple. Why are the Democrats so afraid of Palin and her popularity.
The answer was astonishing.
"You got to be kind to the disabled," Rangel said.
That's right. The charman of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee called Palin disabled -- even when CBS 2 HD called him on it.
CBS 2 HD: "You got to be kind to the disabled???"
Rangel: "She's disabled."
"There is no question about politically it's a nightmare to think that a person's foreign policy is based on their ability to look at Russia from where they live."
Republicans think Rangel's comments are insulting as well as shocking.
"Charlie Rangel's comments are clearly disgraceful," Rep. Peter King, R-Long Island, said. "This is just another liberal Democrat who can't accept an independent woman running for president."
King, who is co-chair of the McCain-Palin campaign in New York, watched Rangel's comments with CBS 2 HD. He was particularly upset because Palin's 4-month-old son, Trig, is disabled. He has Down's syndrome.
"We should be sensitive to her or any woman who has a child or family member who has any afflciiton at all," King said. "And so to use the word disabled in the conetxt of a female candidate for vice president who has a child who is disabled really is wrong. Charlie owes her and the entire disbale community and appology."
Advocates for the disabled are also upset.

"A disabled president ran this country. He was didabled. His name was Roosevelt."
a spokesman for the McCain-Palin campaign also piled on, saying that this kind of rhetoric has no place in politics.

I see no problem at all with Charlie’s comment! Really - he’s being brutally honest and accurate here.
I mean really, if you think about it, we’re ALL disabled. If you actually pay taxes on all your income, then clearly you are mentally handicapped. Charlie doesn’t pay his taxes and there’s no problem, so obviously we’re all a bit slow!

He doesn't even have a place on a ghetto street corner, as far as I'm concerned. Even poor folks usually have enough decency to leave a lady and her disabled baby alone. Rangel makes scum look squeaky clean. This requires a strong comeback from the McCain campaign and from Palin herself.

Rangel, now 78, is a political hack with a lifetime ticket to his Harlem congressional seat, a job he's held for the past 38 years. Charlie Rangel is often abrasive. He's used to shooting his big mouth off with no political consequences because the N.Y. media routinely give him a pass and his constituents don't seem to care much that their congressional representative is a buffoon and a tax cheat.
As many have correctly observed, the left's borderline-insane attacks on Sandra Palin are killing Obama's chances at winning this election. With so many serious issues at stake (the economy, national security) and the 'Bradley Effect' very likely in play in most polls, this kind of stupid, mean-spirited and unfair insult to a lady most Americans see as a lot like them, even if they may not share all of her political opinions, is going to ensure a McCain-Palin win in the presidential election this November 4th. Never mind the 'squeaker' most pundits predict, this could be a Reagan-era landslide, especially if fools like Charlie Rangel keep spewing their malicious insults at Governor Sarah Palin.
