KANSAS CITY, Missouri-Missouri corn farmer Phil Vogler doesn't need to listen to any more campaign speeches or see more political ads to know who he will support in November's U.S. presidential election.
Vogler's vote is going to Republican presidential nominee John McCain. The farmer cites as a key reason for his newly found enthusiasm not McCain's record but his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
"She helps. She is probably more conservative than McCain is," said 38-year-old Vogler, a self-described conservative who farms 2,000 acres in northwest Missouri. "She'll be good on the economy."
Only weeks ago, rural America's 60 million voters were considered largely up for grabs as assorted economic woes focused attention on a need for "change" - the central theme of the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.
But political observers now say the mood may be shifting in favour of Republicans following McCain's selection of the 44-year-old Palin as the nominee for vice president and the party's own agent of change.
The first-term governor's conservative anti-abortion, pro-gun views, along with her tough-talking complaints about government excess and her family life in a small Alaska town, is endearing her to many rural voters.
"She is a phenomenon and people are paying attention," said Dee Davis, president of the Centre for Rural Strategies in Whitesburg, Kentucky. "It's changed the dynamic for the moment for sure."
The centre is conducting a poll on how well the candidates are appealing to those living outside U.S. cities and suburbs and hopes to have fresh data within two weeks, Davis said. "Nobody is happy with the way the country is going. And early on, we saw that really favouring Obama," said Davis. "I don't know that is true now."

Landslide
Yes, although the news may be encouraging, why would anyone want to believe anything that Reuters has to say, beneficial or otherwise. It’s time to start considering where this ‘news’ comes from in my opinion.
As much as this shows how Strong her support is among conservatives, I think the underling agenda of the story is to try and paint her as someone those "hayseed hicks" support.
Very true. In fact, I think she’ll especially be an asset among rural voters in the northern tier states.
Well, I’ll say this much, if the non Urban Areas go to Palin/McCain, or start swinging that way, there is no way Obamao/Biden can bring them back.
Obamao has been campaigning for 18 months now, there is nothing he possibly could say or do to return them to the fold, in fact, all he can do is drive whatever support he has further away.
Sarah Palin was a earthquake and there is no way to go back and stop a earthquake from happening, God Love her family though, they have targets on their backs for the next 52 days.
This is another interesting line. What are they trying to say, Obama cares more about employing people during hard times?
Sarah Power !
Yessir, them rubes Cleatus, Dorkus and Emanuale need to quite cling’in to them guns and bibles and come on over to the comunitee-organizin side o’the street!
Conservatism wins elections, every time it is tried!
It would be nice if the RINO’s, other entrenched congress critters, and so-called blue-blood republicans would figure that out some day. They were too dense to figure it out after the Reagan era, and now they have been given another example in process, since the pick of the conservative Sarah Palin by McRino.
First impression are so important. People are seeing Sarah and saying “yeah, I can go with that.” I know I did.
The NRA is preparing to mail a flyer out to over 4 million members with Obama’s votes against gun rights over his years in political office.
I am hoping those NRA members receiving this information will use it to educate those friends and relatives they have around them.
Today, I'm even further convinced that what with all the Obama-mania crazed staffers taking pot shots everywhere at Palin and MSM talking snobs on TV, Radio, etc. are driving the heretofore undecided, uninvolved voters, to the McCain/Palin ticket (I must add, they are coming our way because of Palin and inspite of the snobbish elite who declare that she's unprepared and unworthy of the job, especially those lib Hillary snots who hate a woman who really does make it on her own, loves her husband and kids and never views her voters as anything but people like her!
The one group that I've yet to hear lampooned by the media are the union members who hunt, fish and bowl and possibly take their families camping on vacation.
This group must be truly in love with Sarah!
Those of us that “cling to guns & religion” are a sleeping giant and we have now been awakened.
Besides the Bradley/Wilder/Gantt effect, pollsters have not been as good at polling rural voters as urban and suburban voters. Of course Obama is hoping for young voters to turn out better than they have historically and to have cell phone only voters who are not measured by the polls. Still, I suspect the rural voters favoring McCain/Palin by a greater percentage means Obama will not get as high a percentage of the actual votes as he gets in polling.
Oh no ... unfortunately, the Palins will be target rich for Libs indefinitely. Those with working brain cells in the Dim party and the Medjia, realize she is not only a threat now, but that whether the Pubs win this election or not, that Sarah Palin is the new face of the Republican party, she's conservative, she's hugely popular, and if they do not destroy her, she will be an incredible political force on the right for many years to come.
The onslaught against Sarah will never stop.
You’re right, and I’m pretty certain that they have some dirt on Todd Palin, the Obamatons are all cheerleading to get the man out on the Campaign Trail, if he does that, he makes himself a legitimate target.
You ain’t a kiddin’. I’ve always lived in the midwest and I assure you, the only descriptione anyone in “fly-over country” could give for a “Community Organizer” is either “rabble rouser” or the guy who picks up litter along the roadside (who has more positive impact than BHO ever did).
But every one can relate to a working mom, balancing kids, jobs, and home life, family values and family problems.
I love this line and think it could well be her campaign slogan when she runs for President:
“At last, one of US!”
Something tells me that Sarah won't either.
You got that right — she’s definitely a gamer (and she’s our gamer).
