Hurricane Ike Live Thread IV
NOAA/NHC ^ | 14 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 11:29:13 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.

Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather

Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.

Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

I have no desires that involve monkies, thankyouverymuch.

My greatest love (outside of my family of course) is the Orcas. I’ve been chasing them for 13 years every summer in Haro Strait. It’s an addiction.

“My hubby makes all his own ammo”

Sounds like my redneck brothers in Mississippi. They make their own everything..ammo, weapons, rules, beer...I swear they are getting ready for the “South to rise again”...God love em.

Hurricane Ike leaves tiger on loose and lion in church

Here's the lion .. at the church altar .. olord.

They were still there yesterday. Whew!

~~~~
The tiger was the last to make an appearance. Authorities have reported that the animal escaped from its enclosure at an exotic animal center in Crystal Beach and is currently wandering Bolivar Peninsula.
It's unclear why the tiger was left behind in the first place, but authorities are positive that it's hungry and are therefore staying away from it until animal experts arrive to secure the large cat.
I’d like that, if the terms were right. Not a question of compensation, but I have kids and a couple ongoing projects I’d have to work around. It’s doable, but I really have no idea where to start.
You know, I’ve never even tried to hack FR. No need to.
Well no need outside of some really silly typoes, but those force me to proofread, something other sites don’t do. Keeps me on my toes.
Bolivar devastated, no longer a peninsula
***
Published September 16, 2008
BOLIVAR PENINSULA — What was Bolivar Peninsula is now three separate islands, and most homes there were destroyed.
“It’s no longer Bolivar Peninsula,” State Rep. Craig Eiland of Galveston said. “It’s an island times three. The roads are cut, and the bridges are out. Residents won’t be back anytime soon.”
No bodies have been found, but officials said the situation was grim.
“I’m not Pollyanna,” County Judge Jim Yarborough said. “I think we’ll find some. We certainly expect to find some.”
Yarborough said emergency crews were on the ground. He urged the remaining 300 residents to leave on emergency boats and helicopters.
By next week, sheriff’s deputies will institute marshal law, forcing remaining residents out of the area.
Transportation to the area is cut off. The Bolivar Ferry will be down for months. There is no estimate on when the service will return.
Least I could do in light of the REAL work you put into keeping this fine resource going.
BTW, that’s preliminary work, not really thorough. We got some Ike here too and it’s exacerbating significant other issues. That’s based on 20 to 30 images, ten to fifteen of which got looked at hard.
There’s almost certainly exceptions to the general overview, good thing to know before taking it to the bank. Wish I had time for more right now, but it’s not just raining here, it’s pouring.
What freaks me out is that we all KNOW there is dead out there. There has to be. But the fact that they have not been found easily is kind of eerie.
My brother worked on the Mississippi coast burying cables after Katrina and they were constantly “bumping” into bodies, randomly finding one here and there for months after the storm.
This ordeal is so different it seems...and not in a good way.
