Hurricane Ike Live Thread IV
NOAA/NHC ^ | 14 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 11:29:13 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.

Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather

Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.

Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

That’s very nice of you, Allegra. Are all your family safe and accounted for now?

Godspeed to all involved.

While I would never have voted for Kinky, I’m not a fan of Perry (Gov Zoolander). The only thing I can say for Zoolander is that he was the best choice we had.

Chris Bell - LOL - he lost his bid to get the other Dem candidate off the ballot. He’s crying big time now.

SWBell has deployed mobile cell towers.

A buddy of mine invented them for these situations

Is it odd there aren’t any estimates given for missing people?

Hi SE Mom! I was speculating last night (and it IS only speculation) that perhaps the press has been reminded of how irresponsibly they repeated every wild rumor about deaths during Katrina, and have been warned not to say anything about fatalities until there are some verifed facts.

Reporters already screaming about ice and water...Houston Dem mayor saying ‘Fema will be held responsible’...this is such a crock of crap!!

Oh, no....I'm not seeing any of this. Please tell me it's on local TV and those dimbulbs are not embarrassing our city nationally. And Sheila Jcakson-Lee...{shudder!}

That might be good news. But it seems there were a lot of 911 calls during the storm, at least from west Galveston.

The National Guard in Wisconsin sent five helicopters and 29 crew members to central Arkansas where an intermediate staging base is located.

Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Tim Donovan says the choppers and crew members will remain at the staging base until their support is needed by officials in Texas.

Two Blackhawk helicopters from Madison’s 147th Aviation battalion and three Huey helicopters from the 832nd Medical Company in West Bend arrived at Camp Robinson near Little Rock Tuesday night.

******

Guard members in Oklahoma, Arkansas (6,000 guards members available), Kansas and Missouri have anticipated the problems associated with heavy rain and winds and will be ready to respond, said state officials.

“We lost everything,” Rivera cried from the rescue boat.

The couple chose not to evacuate, thinking the storm would not be as bad as predicted. But they found themselves fleeing to the attic when water rushed into the house and rose 7 feet up the walls.

Rescue crews plucked them and others trapped in homes and moved them to higher ground elsewhere on the island.

Sorry it took so long. I had to run out to get a coffee pot to support my new habit.

I guess the water all ran down hill! Maybe it soaked in?

Here's a US map of observed precipitation for yesterday only from water.weather.gov:

CONUS + Puerto Rico: 9/13/2008 1-Day Observed Precipitation
Valid at 9/13/2008 1200 UTC - Created 9/14/08 10:31 UTC

I'll try to find a similar map of our area. (doesn't that coffee smell great when it's brewing?)

I am guessing it was from today. It was different from what was shown yesterday from the private pilot (photos upthread). The video had a blueish tint. I think it’s on KPRC (2). They are showing it again.

I just spoke to a friend in Louisville, KY, which has been getting some outer bands of Ike since last night. She said they’re getting wind gusts of up to 70 mph, but no rain. Her garden shed’s door blew right off, and there are shingles standing straight up on several houses on her street, as well as guttering gone or hanging from roofs. There are reports of large trees down all over Louisville.

I almost voted for Kinky thinking he would be ‘benign’ and do no serious damage.

Its situations like this that require leadership that made me vote for Perry.

Still... I dont like the guy. I think he is giving us the hose.

We had an 8 billion dollar tax surplus and he jacked our property taxes.

The man has got to go.
