It's the Sex, Not Bristol Palin's Pregnancy, That Upsets Conservatives
US News & World Report ^ | September 10, 2008 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 09/12/2008 10:49:50 AM PDT by presidio9

She's not in the news much this week, but Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's pregnant 17-year-old daughter Bristol is still the talk of conservative groups, especially family organizations. And while the buzz is still positive over her decision to have the baby and even marry the 18-year-old father, there's no sympathy for their out-of-wedlock sex that landed both of them in the headlines. The subject was addressed today by Family Research Council President Tony Perkins when he was asked during a media roundtable if he would have been so forgiving if one of Sen. Barack Obama's daughters were to get pregnant. "If Barack Obama's daughter or anybody found themselves in the same position and made that same decision we would give that same response," he says. Actually, he was asked about conservative groups "rallying around" Bristol, to which Perkins says, "The rallying around . . . was in that this is a problem that knows no barrier in our society. It happens to the wealthiest and poorest of families. It is a real problem that we have a teenage pregnancy problem in our society. Now, there are two choices you can make when that happens. You can bring that child to term and have a baby, and give it up for adoption or keep it, or you can abort that child. Obviously, being consistent with what we believe is a true pro-life perspective, is give that child birth."

But, he added, "We were not applauding—I don't think anybody was applauding—the fact that their daughter became pregnant out of wedlock. What they were rallying around is the fact that even though she made a poor choice, she made a good choice in giving that child the right to life. Some will say that that was a political decision that her mom obviously forced her into. The daughter was in her fifth month of pregnancy, so this had nothing to do with being vice president."

Then he focused on teen sex and said that churches and parents have to figure out a better way to help kids understand the implications of it. "The pregnancy is not the problem. The problem is the decision to engage in, as young people who are emotionally unprepared and economically unprepared . . . an activity that can produce another life. There are emotional issues that are attached to that type of behavior," says Perkins. "It is a decision that is going to impact the rest of their life."

Well, if she were not pregnant these people wouldn't be upset about the sex, because they wouldn't know! I'm growing tired of this story. Seriously, it's none of our business. Besides, she is getting married, and will the 18 (an adult) soon.

This is enough about Bristol Palin. We all know that she had sex out of marriage, and is pregnant;

The press needs to leave her alone.

These people do not understand conservatives. They think we are scared of sex. How do they explain five children? The Immaculate Conception? (laughing)

I agree with you.

We can all discuss the subject of teen sex or unwed mothers or what or who should teach these subjects. We should not discuss the individuals by name especially in the national press.

Conservatives and Pro-Lifers have been enthusiastically supporting Pregnancy Crisis Centers for the past 25 years. This is not the first time they have dealt with the matter of Teen Pregnancy.

How this nationwide movement escaped the notice of the MSM, I will never understand.

I don't approve of teen sex. The kids made a mistake and its time to move on. Or is the liberal media holding them to a different standard than Clinton? At least they didn't commit adultery!

Typical MSM Christophobic propaganda! What Perkins actually said was this:

"We were not applauding—I don't think anybody was applauding ....

And USN&WR translates "not applauding" to "upset" - in the title --- "It's the Sex ... That Upsets Conservatives".

Tony, Tony, Tony - teen pregnancy can be truly life altering. But God is full of compassion for people. That is something those without faith will never grasp!

I haven't seen any “conservative” commentary that is upset.
Can anyone find any links of condemnation by “conservatives”?

The only “upset” I see is, faux, and in with the continuing blogger-driven liberal media obsession with publicly discussing the sex life of a 17 year old girl, scorning deriding and ridiculing her, in an effort to discredit her mother.

Now this jerk off admits the story is dying so he is trying to keep the story going.

No one is saying what happened is what should happen to our children. People do fall short. That is human nature and even good people let God down at times. When they repent, they are never without His love.

What upsets me is lying liberals who try to destroy good conservatives.

At least they didn't commit adultery!

From the technical standpoint of "The Big 10", actually they did...

Any pastor I have ever talked to has clearly stated that nookie outside of marriage (or even the desire to have do it with some one you are not married to, see Matthew 5:28) is a no-no. Even if you "fix" it later by marrying.

I must add, given my own record in that area, that I would certainly not be in the line to cast stones in this case and applaud the couple for not adding murder to the list of things they need to ask God's mercy to cover.

The headline indicates being more “upset” than the article content corroborates. More manufactured news. Basically all he said was that she made a mistake, but we are glad she didn’t make any more bad decisions after that.

These liberal elitists in the press do not understand conservatives.

It's neither. Conservatives aren't upset. They may find it disappointing, but they are still caring and understanding.

Now, an abortion -- *that* would've had them upset.
