Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I wish I knew when that evacuation notice changed from voluntary to mandatory in Galveston....but maybe that mandatory evac should have been given right at the start of the storm warnings.
Good morning - so glad light has come to the area under this storm!!! The darkness is the worst!
TWC said Ike stayed a Category 2 storm when it went ashore - so that is a blessing it did not get stronger.
TWC guy who was at Clute said his immediate area came through with very minor damage - so that is another good thing to hear.
The reporter from dowtown Houston said people were out in the middle of a downtown intersection - “playing” in the storm....
And at least six million people are out of power!!!!
THAT is as you said going to be the worst for so many (Texas power people saying it could be WEEKS before power is restored to all....ugh ugh ugh)
