Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

[OT I know, but tonight I listened to Neal Boortz deconstruct her interview with Charlie Gibson. She cleaned his clock. Even if someone doesn't agree with her point of view, it's undeniable that someone (in the high hierarchy) on the right can finally play the liberal media hack's game and beat him.]

To bad chuck norris isn’t there to hold the wind and water back!

Norris opened his ranch to storm refuges... did a segment on Fox about it. Cool.

Here is an update on it...

Brennan’s Restaurant burns to the ground in downtown Houston

01:04 AM CDT on Saturday, September 13, 2008

KHOU.com staff report

One of Houston’s historic restaurants burned to the ground early Saturday morning. Firefighters were powerless to save Brennan’s of Houston as high winds from Hurricane Ike prevented crews from dousing the flames.

The fire was reported at 12:20 a.m., by the time fire trucks arrived, though, the restaurant was fully engulfed. Almost immediately, fire crews went into a defensive posture to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

A Houston Fire Department assistant chief told 11 News that two people were inside the restaurant at the time of the fire. Those people were taken to a local hospital.

The extent of their injuries was not known.

Brennan’s opened in downtown Houston more than 40 years ago and constantly rated as one of the best eateries in the city.

More details on the fire as they become available.

Casey Stegal in Clear Lake at the Hilton said there were a lot of media and people who came to the hotel and glass was blown out and apparently has damage in several places. They’re relocating people and coming up with plans if they have to get out.

The sound keeps cutting out so it’s hard to get everything. They are waiting and preparing for what may happen given what’s occured at the hotel already and that they haven’t gotten the worst of it yet.

That was cool, no doubt he’s a conservative with strong values. If I had to bug out and knew I could go to his ranch, that would be my spot. Cudos to you Mr. Norris!

The fastest rising surge right now is at Eagle Point in Texas City (West side of Galveston Bay) and at Sabine Pass, leading to Port Arthur and Beaumont. It’s likely Galveston will not see the highest surges .

I was wondering, too, about the “acts of God” when it comes to the Galveston warehouse (boat dry dock) fire. It’s Galveston so I’m sure it’s very clear in their insurance policies either way. I used to work for a dry dock on the east coast and I bet a fire is a TERRRRRRIBLE occasion. Millions of dollars, so many owners. Lawsuits. Ugh.
