"This is very, very important. It's an important industry in our country," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said. "It's about jobs. Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs."

one thing that makes american companies at the moment so lucrative to foreigners
is the low dollar.
it is rising now.
that’s a good idea.
it would allow the american companies some leverage over the unions.
It’s their loss for not competing and producing what the market wants. That’s what they have to do. That’s what every other company has to do and they don’t expect a handout.
The dollar is rising now, because of the new cold war. A (massive) amount of money is fleeing Russia right now — a lot of it is fleeing into dollars.
If that continues to heat up, then the dollar will probably remain strong, for a while.
However the real longer-term reason the dollar has been falling isn’t global tension, or the lack of it. It’s our MASSIVE unilateral trade deficit with China especially, and with Arab oil states.
We keep sending the equivalent of an entire Fortune 500 company out of America forever, every ... (ready for this?)
EVERY SINGLE MONTH.
Every month, we lose another Fortune 500 company of manufacturing and fortune.
It’s enriching our enemies, and doing *nothing* for us.
So right now, the dollar is heading up.
If we don’t stop the insane destruction of our very own manufacturing capabilities, and the irresponsible squandering of our national wealth.
It will all be gone.
Sooner than anyone thinks.
We are like irresponsible heirs to a fortune.
Forgetting how the fortune was made — too busy spending it, on wine, women and song.
What happens, when the money runs out?
(it will)
American workers are not “they”.
American industry is “we”.
99 cent gasoline, crude at $20 a barrel. At least for America.
well, cheer up!
I’ll cheer up, if you buy American.
Deal?
ok.
:)
America first.
yes sir!
That’s a bit of a rhetorical question seeing that during Bush’s administration so many manufacturing firms have moved jobs oversees without penalty.
so, what are you proposing?
government intervention to prevent jobs from moving overseas?
that’s what the democrats want to do.
I propose, Republicans agree to this idea of keeping American jobs in (I know, it’s a wild idea) AMERICA... in return for democrats supporting drilling.
Enough with the “globalism” already!!!
We win by keeping jobs here, and we win by spending less importing oil.
Let’s get started!
Even CHINA has seen an overall decrease in the number of industrial jobs over the past 20 years.
And being economically illiterate, she does not know it.
I’d prefer a spirited trade war, actually.
What we need to see is John McCain style combativeness, in America’s trade policy! We get instead, France.
Before Sarko.
We’ve capitulated on trade for so long, there is now an actual base of support BUILT around surrendering on trade.
It’s the reason our banks are going under, and things are only going to get worse.
Because we’re being weenies about trade.
We’re giving away our nation.
