A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued from the mouth of the
Mississippi River westward to Cameron Louisiana.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued from Cameron westward to
Port Mansfield Texas.

Hurricane Ike is moving NW at 8 mph. Winds 100 mph, 958 mb.

Ike is a very large tropical cyclone. Hurricane force winds extend
outward up to 90 miles from the center and tropical storm force
winds extend outward up to 205 miles.

My shipments going to the Houston area have been cancelled for now. Everybody in the area is stocking up and evacuating. I hope that this doesn’t become another Galveston-like hurricane from 1900 or Hurricane Mitch.

One of our glorious local TV stations here in Houston has in its crawler that Bell County has announced voluntary evacuation.

Ha! Bell County is in the center of the state.

It is Bee County, according to the Beeville news webpage, which is under voluntary evacuation.

Funny stuff. The TV station can’t get the name of the county right.

Somebody on TV was saying it could reach the Austin/San Antonio area as a category 2 hurricane. Don’t think Austin has been hit by a category 2 hurricane before, but I’m guessing that I won’t be sitting in the stadium watching UT beat Arkansas come Saturday afternoon.

Refugio, Texas, is fairly far inland, but I think it might get hit by a large Hurricane surge.

I believe it is extremely flat between Refugio and the Gulf of Mexico...

South of Corpus Christi, Padre Island will take some of the Hurricane Surge (be a partial barrier).

But the part of the Texas coast between Corpus Christi and Victoria seems to be very vulnerable...

As long as that historic ol' Mission survives (from the Battle for Texas Independence)...

So much for my weekend camping trip. Oh well everyone keep safe. One thing, Texans have the best Emergency Response state wide system in the Union, we started it back in the 1960s after so many hurricanes hit the Texas coast.

Update on Texas Preparations for Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Camille, back in 1969, filled the entire Gulf of Mexico from the Satellite picture before going ashore (that is how big the storm grew).

I am afraid that Hurricane Ike might grow in sheer size as well as develop perhaps into a Cat 4 storm.

It will be really bad if HURRICANE IKE's forward motion slows down so that it impacts a day later... (Forward speed stalling).

That would allow the storm to grow in size.

Texas needs to prepare now.

Louisiana might stay alerted, as a shift in direction would be bad on Thursday/Friday morning...

Thank you NautiNurse. I just went to the old thread to reply and found it locked, lol.

I still see most of the ‘tracks’ coming right over the Victoria area, but it has edged to the east a bit and may more so.

This storm is being compared to Hurricane Carla in 1961. The eye of Carla went directly over Victoria but my parents home in Texas City had 18 inches of water from flooding. That’s over 160 miles away approximately. They now have a barrier built in Texas City.

Thanks to all who wrote me. To others on the thread, I have never ever heard of a hurricane reaching as far inland as Austin or Conroe but they may have rain and always the possibility of tornadoes.

Prayers for everyone. We don’t want Ike, but we hate to see it hit others too!! I missed my week down at South Padre Island because hurricane Dolly tore roofs off the condos. They all shut down for repairs after Dolly.
