Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

True, it is not an official forecast, but even the NHC has backed off on the intensity.

I am not saying this won’t be devastating. It will be a horrible event, even at a CAT 2 just due to the immense size of the thing.

Off topic to this serious thread but a question.

Do you know where Dog Gone is or why he’s not posting lately? I know he used to follow the hurricane threads very closely and was always participating. I checked his history and his last post was on Aug. 13.

Bay water over that causeway is not that unusual...it happens often.

thank goodness....people need to leave. Even if the winds are not too bad, the surge will be really bad from Ike.

That will be very dangerous....

They were like OMG look at the waves over the tops of 5 story hotels in Cuba. First off, it was a wave slamming into their seawall and the seawall won. If it was a disaster the wave would have cleared the seawall without breaking. If that’s the measure, I’ve see 3 story waves hit St. Joe Island Jetty on a stiff east wind. That picture or the levee breach during Katrina’s the real deal. Utter devastation.

I commented yesterday that the 13th was the same day Kim Jong Il disappeared too. A Coincidence?

I am now convinced Ike will not strengthen much before landfall

The next 12 hours are critical... Ike is starting to move over an area of warmer water now... If it's going to get it together, it'll be soon.

This is a strange storm... I don't recall ever seeing a 945 mb storm with only 100 mph winds....

People in Houston need to prepare as if it will be a Cat 3. Because, by the time we KNOW, it will be too late to leave.

Perhaps he’s not ronery right now?

On another note, I think my wife is stuck on Dauphin Island today with my daughter. They are at a marine biology class this week. Is the bridge to the island open or closed? Do you know?

from the HOU NWS

INUNDATION LIKELY!

It has been 25 years since Alicia hit and they never did repair or rebuild the hiway between High Island and Port Aurthur. Alicia did an enormous amount of beach dammage and Ike may double that amount.
