Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Ike evacuee information (Waco)

snip....All state-assisted evacuees initially will be taken to the Church of the Open Door, 900 N. Loop 340, in Bellmead, Holze said. It is serving as the county’s “reception center.”

Once there, evacuees will be assessed to determine the best place for them to stay, Holze said. That screening process will include checks for medical problems and a determination of whether a person is a registered sex offender or on parole, he said.

After that assessment, evacuees will be sent to one of the county’s shelters. About 10 different sites have been identified for potential use, Holze said, including several city of Waco recreation centers and local churches.

From last night’s 10 pm news, looked as though it was passing over us too. We live by FB/Harris county line.

So true. They figure we can handle our stuff unlike the city that care forgot. But shoot man, if we get slammed, it’ll be a bigger humanitarian disaster because we have 8 times the people.

that's left to do is wait for Ike to come calling!

It's gonna be a LONG night tomorrow....

Earlier, someone posted a really good idea... Freeze some gallon jugs of water and keep them in your freezer, or cooler.... that'll keep things cool for 4-5 days.

Of course... you may be w/o power there for 1-2 weeks.. or more.

I too hope and join you in prayer that you ARE wrong!

On another note, my mom and aunt live one block off the Gulf in Alabama. Mom is watching waves like she has never seen (she's good about evacuating before they get this large)..and she's be on and off the island (Gulf Shores) since the 40's, living there since the early 80's. Ike isn't headed to south alabama, yet we are dealing with coastal flooding.

Haven't heard from my sister in League City yet. My bro in law wanted to surf yesterday, but mandatory evacs in Galveston kept him home. (a grown man and still all he sees in a hurricane is surfing waves! sheesh)

The wind field is HUGE with this! So don’t focus on the landfall..the strongest winds will be right of the eye..thats why a landfall south of houston is bad for them..and a storm moving NNW landing near freeport is the worse case

From what i can tell there is a HUGE amount of water already piling up in the Gulf...

and to make matters worse Saturday is a FULL moon which means higher then normal tides

Is everyone going to put their general location in their tagline like what we did for Rita?

“There was a rather intense conference call this morning between the NHC and Houston/Galveston.

They got the hint”

My mother & sister live near Freeport, they left this morning. Then called me to find a hotel from them to stay in . . . I spent an hour on the phone! Every hotel this side of San Antonio is booked

"Freeze some gallon jugs of water and keep them in your freezer, or cooler"

I have a side by side fridge/freezer so gallon jugs don't fit. I use gal and qt size freezer bags and freeze them laying flat, so they are easier to move around. I use filtered water should it have to be used for drinking water.

Actually... I still have a hunch that this storm will do like Rita, and jog a little further north than they’re predicting now...

Landfall where Rita went in is about the best..from a damage standpoint.

But... it’s really hard to predict this one... it just depends on timing...

If I could get there, I would be going to my brother's in C.S.

Again I am stuck at home with a bed-ridden mother and our Emergency Management can't get resources to help special needs people get out. So here we sit. We got out for Rita but that was 3 yrs ago and she could sit in a car seat--but not now.

When it hits land, it seems it will head for us. We are on the dirty side.

Kassie, I’m in Katy (south of I-10) and I just heard on the local news that the eye will pass right over Katy with up to 100 mph winds. Uh, oh.....

Just to show you how much water is piling up in the Gulf..keep in mind how far these places are from the center

from another forum

Tidal flooding in Tampa
____________________________________________
Along the Mississippi Gulf Coast several roads, including Highway 90 have been closed. The surge from Ike is up to the seawall along Highway 90 in some places in Gulfport.

The roads in Southern Mobile and Baldwin Counties in AL. are flooding....I live in Mobile County on the coast....lots of roads already closed here and more to come

I just spoke to my parents who were just leaving Galveston. They reported that traffic isn’t bad at all on I-45 yet.
