Glad to hear west end is under mandatory evacuation orders. Last I heard it was voluntary. No body wants to do another Rita like evac! Ike might not strengthen to a cat 4, it is still a cat 2. Friendswood should be OK. Seabrook, Khema, Clear Lake, LaPort waterfronts are going to get hammered. Texas City too.

The projected track appears to be shifting clockwise.

“... far west Houston,...”
And then there was Allison. That one ate my car in Sugar Land the day before the ‘great’ flood downtown. The Rice campus was a big swamp.

I’m trying to remember, but wasn’t it Allison that caused streets in downtown Houston to be covered with shattered glass?

Hurricane Alicia of ‘83 was the bullseye on downtown Houston, which popped glass out as if buildings were bug-eyed stress squeeze toys.
TS Allison of ‘01 was the thunderstorm from Hell.

Hey Orange, how you holding up? DH managed to find a generator in Brenham last night. It was the last one in the area.
We received an email from the head of our school district last night saying that school will be in session for Cy-Fair ISD Thursday and Friday. To me, that’s the height of stupidity. That’s just what we need are thousands of buses on the roads while people are trying to evacuate.
Is everyone going to put their general location in their tagline like what we did for Rita?

Please correct me on the exact details, but wasnt it a bus full of nursing home patients that rolled over in bumper-to-bumper traffic? Not a rollover. I think it was an oxygen tank (belonging to one of the patients) that ignited.

Thanks Meek. Looks like the track is moving to the east of us now. I watch the ‘tracks’ on a link from Drudge and yesterday most went right over my area, now they have moved eastward. Time will tell...

Winds 100 mph, 945 mb, moving WNW at 10 mph. Hurricane force winds extend outward 115 miles, and tropical
storm force winds extend 255 miles from the center.
Ike is located about 575 miles E of Brownsville Tx, and about miles SSE of the Mississippi River.

Depends on your definition of “fun”
If fun means frolicking and jolliness and jocularity then I don't think that's it.
If fun means OH CRAP that is a big ole ‘cane in the gulf and its gonna tear a lot of stuff up and we are gonna be a mess for a while then that would be correct

I recall wondering whether one of the patients on the bus was sneaking a cigarette around the oxygen tanks.

Our utility companies around here are top notch. If the power (etc) does go off, it won’t be for long.
You ought to be an old hand at dealing with hurricanes. I’m sure you thought your sons well.

The bus had very poor brake conditions and metal-on-metal friction sparked the fire, while O2 accelerated the flames. But the fire was well under way at the point so primary cause was the mechanical condition of the fly by night carrier.
