Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

It would be somewhat difficult for the storm to make landfall in LA at this point I think. The bend back more to the west appears to be beginning.

Cameron County LA is under a Hurricane Watch.

Don't you think it is time to put Louisiana back on the topic list? I know -- overeager!

I was thinking about your post. It might help but....the hurricane force is about 110 miles each side? That’s Brownsville to CC. Unimaginable.

Lol. I suggested seeding the Gulf with Tums but seriously I think ocean storms have some kind of a purpose. I don’t know if we should be messing with them. It’s probably better to get out of the way or figure out how to build to survive winds and water. jat

Hi DM,

I’d check the Ch. 11 weather boards. I always lurk over there during hurricane season.

With regards to Harris County OEM, I can’t believe they’ve been sitting on school closures and evacuations. Half of my neighbors didn’t have a clue about where Ike was going to until I told them late this afternoon.

We are Houston natives and we were living in Yorktown VA when Carla did her dirty work. It is the first time I can remember that TV coverage was completely turned over to a hurricane or anything else, for that matter. As I remember it sat off the coast for several day before coming ashore. How high was the storm surge do you remember?

Louisiana added. I guess, assuming predictions are correct, that tomorrow afternoon would be the time to request the upgrade to breaking news.

Don't you know the MSM does not stir up the natives until they deem it necessary? Why, if the natives knew about a storm they would demand coverage 24/7 and they would have to cancel Springer, Oprah, Montel plus all the soaps. Best keep em in the dark to the last minute.

There is a 70mb pressure differential between Miami and the center of the storm. Ike is now a big vacuum cleaner that feeds on itself. They all are, but this is a BIG one right now.

Doesn't happen very often. The next time was the Kennedy Assassination, of course.
