(CNN) — Barack Obama accused the McCain campaign of "lies" and "Swift boat" politics Wednesday, after nearly a day of claims his 'lipstick on a pig' comment was a sexist attack leveled at GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin.

It's like McCain's joke about the rich being those with incomes over 5 million. You always have to remember that context will be stripped away. Politics is a minefield, and you use your mouth to navigate it. When Barack unfairly quotes the “5 million” line, can he complain about this? Like someone else here pointed out and that I was surprised to learn, Obama never beat a tough opponent in any of his elections, and the Dems have been complaining that Palin wasn't vetted.

They use the media to calm their fears. It is the unwillingness to look evil in the face and see it for what it is. This fear taken to its end is what allows Europeans to ignore dictators until they show up for a parade in their capital city.

It may be an old saying, but in this particular context it was obviously a reference to Palin, and the audience clearly took it that way. If he wasn't referring to Palin, who or what was he referring to? But you have a point - obviously his statement could reasonably be interpreted as him calling Palin a pig, so it was foolish for him to say it and think that he wouldn't be called to account for it.

But it doesn’t wash, and if he’s at the point where he has to preserve his base, IT’s OVER.

He IS trying to stop the bleeding from his base.
It’s not over, but two months from the election and he’s blocking shots. He’s behind, and he’s playing defense. Plus, he has to spend a great deal of resources covering up his past from scrutiny.

That’s not good for him.

Assuming things stay the same until the debates, really the first one is the only one that will turn heads, he’ll be behind with a month to go. Again, not good for him.

Like someone else said, what we’re watching is their October surprise. Which by definition is a desperation move. His appeal has stagnated, he has to tear down his opponents.
