Obama knocks press on 'made-up controversy'
politico ^

Posted on 09/10/2008 8:11:55 AM PDT by flyfree

Speaking at a high school in Norfolk, Obama took a few moments to address what he calls "the made-up controversy" of the day, Amie Parnes reports.

Obama said the McCain campaign moved to "seize an innocent remark and take it out of context because they knew it's catnip for the news media."

"See, it would be funny, but the news media decided that would be the lead story yesterday. This happens every election cycle. Every four years, this is what we do. This is what they want to spend two of the last 55 days talking about...Enough!" he said.

Obama called the attacks "lies, outrage and swift boat politics."

"These are serious times and they call for a serious debate...spare me all the phony outrage. Spare me all the phony talk about change."

No apology...put some ice on it ladies. My sexist comments are too nuanced and smart for you.

“Spare me?” “SPARE ME?”

Cannot this Ivy league schooler find another more...intellectual phrase than the adolescent “spare me?”

Which would NOT include “uh, talk to the hand” while he's waving his head back and forth.

Dude, seriously. Uh.

I think this whole lipstick thing is kind of silly. But I expected Obama to come out, apologize for any misunderstandings, and go forward.

Instead, he's pissed. Lashing out. Comes across as quite the hothead, doesn't he? :-)

These are serious times and they call for a serious debate...spare me all the phony outrage. Spare me all the phony talk about change.

And they say McCain is the one who can't control his temper. Real smart, Barry. First, trash women. Then trash the media. The media that's protected your backside for your entire career. The media that could suddenly get real curious about what you actually did in Chicago. Meanwhile, there's less than 60 days left in the campaign and you're running out the clock.

Two days from now, Sarah Palin will give her first national interview since being selected as veep. It will be the most watched political interview of all time. And everyone will go into the weekend talking about her interview and whether or not Obama called her a pig. Unless McCain goads you into saying something even more stupid.

Schmidt, you magnificent bastard.

Again, he didn’t mean to call her a pig, but it was not the best of phrases to use. And besides his overall delivery just makes him look childish and partisan. And that is NOT what has gotten Obama to this point. He’s a one-trick pony, and he does not come off well when he’s not doing the trick.

Obama needs to be careful. If he keeps landing in the fire for making innocent comments that he had no idea would offend anyone...

He might start relating with being a white hetero male...

Yeah. I couldn’t agree more. ;)

I've posted this same comment on a few others posts, but I'll repost one last time (hopefully):

The problem I have with Mr. Obama's most recent 'gaffe' has less to do with this single event -- and more to do with his pattern of comments/actions that belittle women, and his subsequent Eddie Haskell like attempts to 'blow it off'.

There was calling the woman reporter, 'sweetie' (or something like that).
Flipping off Mrs. Clinton in a debate.
This analogy/reference to Mrs. Palin and pigs/fish.

And in all cases the sly, comeback: 'oh no, not me -- you are reading too much into my remarks'...
If just one, or two - sure, maybe they were accidents. At this point, though -- it seems like a pattern.
Pile on top of that Mr. Obama's upbringing (an absentee mother), and you start getting: 'Mr. Obama the makings of a good case study for a psychology class' - not, 'Mr. Obama, Presidential candidate.'

“Do I hear someone whining?”

We sure do, don’t we! And Obama should not be whining. After all, he got to speak at a highschool in VA. McCain was scheduled to speak at a highschool in Fairfax, VA, and then he was canceled. The reason from the Fairfax school system: “We do not have political candidates speak during school hours.” (However, I believe (but not sure)that Obama spoke at a school in Fairfax county during the primary.) I guess in Norfolk,VA it is OK for Obama to speak. Wonder if they would allow McCain to speak there too?

” Spare me Obama. And laughter adds just the right touch of sincerity to your remarks.”

Have often thought he views himself as a late night comedian when he delivers one of these speeches.

Appears to be one of his techniques to size up crowd reaction, or interviewers ( O’Reilly)

P.S. Sent O’Reilly the following message which I doubt will show up on his comments section.

Bill

You have been shucked and jived........

Nice try, No Cigar

I agree with both of you. He’s giving red meat to his base here, but they’ve already been locked in and fired up for a long time. He’s not helping himself with undecideds. Unless his staff is somehow under the impression that this “lipstick” attack will spur a tremendous turnout, it makes no sense to me.

I’d have been inclined to give BHO a pass on his remaark, but the way he’s handling the pressure speaks volumes about his temperament and thin skin. Hardly Presidential.

On the flip side, I think it shows that McCain actually thinks things through 10 or 20 moves ahead. I guarantee that he knew that he could get Obama to say something stupid. Obama is alienating women voters and he's alienating the media. He's reminding the PUMA's why they are PUMA's.

Plus, this is going to suck all the oxygen out of Obama's campaign up until the big interview with Sarah Palin airs on ABC. Then that's all anyone will talk about and Obama will have a very hard time regaining control of the news cycle.

Yes, the vicious mainstream media is determined to “swift boat” Obama. Oh, the humanity!
