After months of record-breaking fund-raising, a new sense of urgency in Senator Barack Obamas fund-raising team is palpable as the full weight of the campaigns decision to bypass public financing for the general election is suddenly upon it.
Pushing a fund-raiser later this month, a finance staff member sent a sharply worded note last week to Illinois members of its national finance committee, calling their recent efforts extremely anemic.
At a convention-week meeting in Denver of the campaigns top fund-raisers, buttons with the image of a money tree were distributed to those who had already contributed the maximum $2,300 to the general election, a subtle reminder to those who had failed to ante up.
The signs of concern have become evident in recent weeks as early fund-raising totals have suggested that Mr. Obamas decision to bypass public financing may not necessarily afford him the commanding financing advantage over Senator John McCain that many had originally predicted.

I wonder how much it costs to rent a football stadium, or did they charge admission?
Maybe. If he signed up for federal funds, he'd need to show proof of eligibility to hold the office before the funds could be released.
Maybe he can. Maybe he can't.
But there is certainly something on his real birth certificate he wants to hide.
Obama’s campaign should tell them the surge is working, the military option against Iran is not off the table, that Biden believes life begins at conception and that tax increases on the rich should be delayed as they hurt the economy...
and they will get a TON of money from lefty supporters
:)
And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
Ditto Ohio,I see two to one Mccain/Palin here in NW Ohio. I was in Columbus recently and suspect more ads are run on their stations but didn't see any. The ads for Obama don't seem as effective either...though I am biased. He really is running a bad campaign.
“As a plus all that extra money McCain cant use goes to”
I hear a sense of snarkiness, “we are the smart ones,” in the Obama people in this article.
Not smart. By mid-October there will be stories of down ticketers complaining about Obama’s Chicago control of the money.
A lot of that was paid for by telecom companies.
Hey, don't say nutin' bad about the Welsh!
the Saudis will donate.,,,,,,,
HELP!........
Oooooh, I’m lovin’ it! This could prove to be more than just a flip-flop embarrassment for Obama, it could prove to be a strategic disaster.
Every point he drops in the polls will be $20 million less he can expect from these fund raisers over the next two months.
When intrade gets below 50 he will have a huge layoff of staff and be fund raising three times a week.
Maybe he can send his Donors a TAX BILL to raise the funds he needs......
Obama’s great executive experience is on display for all to see.
He made a foolish decision by declining public financing and an equally foolish one by selecting Biden as his running mate.
Both seem to be indicative of judgment clouded by overconfidence and an inaccurate assessment of the situation at hand.
And this is the guy who will magically fix everything in DC?
Great name for a finance chair - Penny. May she bring in nothing but pennies . . .
The money meltdown continues.
LOL
Right. His campaign is built on hype and support of the young. The more it looks like he’s going to crash then the more his support will wither away. “Americans love a winner”, as Gen. Patton once said. What Patton didn’t say is that Americans also love to abandon a loser in great haste.
He's so enamored with his 'new ideas' that he doesn't see all the implications. All those phone numbers he got with the "Text Message V.P." were supposed to be for election day contacts.
By Election Day, half of those phone numbers will be cancelled due to non payment.
