About 5 years ago, I was chaperoning my daughter's 4th grade class at Epcot. I asked all the girls in my group if they knew what their heritage was, so we could visit "their" country. I asked a little black girl and she said "Africa". So, I asked, "Do you know which nation in Africa?" and she immediately replied, "Rwanda".

It was a very hot day and a cold shiver ran up my spine and I got goose bumps. I asked her how long she had been in the U.S. and she told me about 3 years. I asked her if she knew why she left and she stone cold told me, "Yes, the civil war. My father was the only doctor in our village of 3000 and then he became the mayor. We had to flee when they started killing people and we were the only family to survive. I have never seen my aunts and nieces again."
