Parents can only do so much. They can't prevent a child from making a life altering mistake. The Palins to their credit, didn't take the easy way out with their daughter.

Well, they could have made sure their daughter was on birth control.

"Well, they could have made sure their daughter was on birth control."

How do you "make sure"?
Do you have (or have you had) a teenage daughter?
If she has condoms in her purse the only way you know she uses them is to watch, although they are not fool proof.
If she has a prescription for birth control pills the only way to make sure she is taking them is to watch. But they aren't fool proof either are they?
Tell me EXACTLY how the Palins were to "make sure" she was on birth control. Tell me what they did not do right. How do you know she wasn't on birth control?

Ohhhhhhhhh ...you don't know do you!

That doesn't make any sense. Sara would then be a hypocrite.

Almost every teenage girl I’ve ever known to get pregnant got pregnant on one form of birth control or another.

More important than giving them the false comfort of some prescription that promises to let them behave without consequences, parents should use these situations as life lessons in personal responsibility. And that seems to be exactly what the Palin’s are doing.

Some people don’t believe in birth control.

That is not a responsibility for parents of UNDERAGE CHILDREN. Some parents do do this, but it can simply encourages the sex because they know there isn’t any viable fallout (VD is not much of a negative when the “feelings are right”).

Making young adults know they are responsible for their actions is a great thing.

don’t assume that to be an answer. You don’t know what their religious belief are. As a Catholic we teach NFP which is far beyond the old rythm method they used to teach. So its not about teaching birth control

I”m shocked at the behavior of some on this thread on this subject. Maybe its us younger generations that have a much different viewpoint on this because we grew up in the 80s not the 50’s ...

Is that any guarantee she would use it? She’s a big girl, she knows where babies come from doesn’t she? For all we know, she may have been engaged to marry after school was over, and just slipped up! Sometimes no matter how many times someone tells a teenager not to do something, they still get away! The girl is not an animal to be “controlled”!

Sometimes the best, and most conservative parents have this happen, I know a few myself! Also, one of my daughters was in this situation. No matter how many times I fretted about her, and tried to tell her, she still didn’t listen! She had a miscarriage, and it was very sad. Still I supported her anyway when she got pregnant again but married the father a few years later!

My daughter was very strong-willed in many other ways, just not that I’m afraid! But I have two lovely grandchildren I treasure, and two that passed away (she had two miscarriages). Besides, it’s none of our business anyway what Mrs. Palin’s family does, is it? And you know that even the great, conservative R.Reagan had difficulties with his two younger kids.

Could he have stopped them from doing what they were going to do? I don’t think so! Jeb Bush and
George Bush could always know what their own kids would do once they grew up and got away from them. They had problems with drugs and alcohol-related incidents!

Well, they could have made sure their daughter was on birth control.

THAT was uncalled for. It's up to parents to do their best to teach morals. And they are underscored by the Church they attend. I've been Assemblies of God, I KNOW what they teach. I also had a child, age 19, who was NOT on Birth Control because she had signed a promise to God not to have sexual relationships until marriage, come to me after a date rape, pregnant. Was I supposed to know that the boys she would with would get her drunk and rape her? How was I to know this? Was I to bind myself to her and go everywhere with her? And how was I to earn a living for us if I was always tied to her? And why weren't those boys' mothers tied to them to kepp them from bringing the booze and raping my child?

Your comment was uncalled for. Children given birth control for birth control and not for another medical reason is like telling them to go play in the street hoping the 18-wheelers with STDs don't run them down. And if you do have a child on Birth Control for another medical reason, you surely do not expect them to go "play like she's married" just because she's on Birth Control.

You do know that the "old man in the mountain" face slid off the mountain in the grant-it State, right? /just teasing, just teasing
