ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

It’s a minor problem. They should have announced this when McCain was considering her rather than letting it come out now. Having said that, it does indeed depend on how Palin handles it. They could easily have covered this up by killing the child, but they didn’t, even with a potential national political debut coming up. That says something very nice about their character. They don’t see the baby as a punishment and abortion as the Obama-style cure.

Why does it seem that so many political families have seriously screwed up kids? I'm convinced that kids of famous people do stuff like this subconsciously (or consciously) as a cry for attention.

Of course, the Palins are going to be held to a standard MUCH higher than democrats are held to. But conservatives expect their politicians to practice what they preach. It's as simple as that.

Sadly, this revelation probably will hurt McCain/Palin among a certain segment of the GOP base. Poor Bristol is going to learn a hard lesson--that sinful acts do have real world consequences and that there are A LOT of truly evil people in this world more than willing to use a young girl's mistake to destroy her mother.

Something people without kids often don’t get. Of course there are those “perfect” parents of “perfect” children who never ever do anything wrong thanks to their vigilance. Which is quite a feat considering how busy they must be paying their bills each month on time & in full. The rest of us know stuff happens sometimes, the best you can do. Actually, if you read the article, McCain knew about before he chose her. But decided it would not affect his decision to choose Palin.

Why would it? This is life. Bristol made a mistake, and unfortunately an all-too-common one. She will deal with the consequences. Like good parents, Todd and Sarah will be there for her.

Doesn't sound like anyone is spinning it as good or bad. It is what it is and is mostly irrelevant. No spin required. I'm sure the media will try to make it out to be a huge deal - but that's because they are disparate to find anything that can to do political harm to Gov Palin. I expect the dregs of society, people like Bill Maher, will have some crude jokes and snide comments to make, but that just reflects on who they are as people.

The ONLY reason this matters is because the Dems and their minions in the MSM stereotypically believe that this will hurt the ticket with conservatives, who as we all know hate and fear sex and want the death penalty for pre-marital sex. They will flog it until they realize that it isnt’ driving conservatives away from McCain/Palin.
