ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

This hits the nail on the head for me. I wonder how many parents can relate to Sarah and Todd. I would think the vast majority. So many people we know have had a crisis of some kind with an adolescent child.
The Palins are handling it admirably by welcoming the father of the child and the grandchild into their family.
I don't think less of her because this happened. It speaks well of the Palins that Bristol felt she could tell them the truth rather than secretly run off to an abortion clinic.
It does happen....I am a grandfather at an earlier age than I expected...a happy one at that.
And my parents crossed state lines to get married some years ago seven months before I was born.
I can only wish the best here.
Healing of hearts and love for everyone involved.
Soon we’ll see a story about this slamming Palin’s kid for ruining her life by having this child at such an early age instead of having an abortion; How she’ll have a hard time with child care, won’t go to college, etc. yada-yada, ad nauseum.
Again, IF TRUE (it's not on the official website), this is very sad.
Those who don’t think it is incredibly difficult to grow up in a political or otherwise prominent family have never been there. It’s easy to just think the kids somehow have it made, but the reality demonstrated time and again, across time and place, is that it is very hard.
As a kid, your every action is seen as a reflection on your parents, and if you are less than perfect you have betrayed them. Yet, at the age when peer opinions matter more than anything, to be seen as a better-than-thou ‘goody two shoes’ is the kiss of death.
The usual deal is for these kids to put in hours upon hours making a good show of it, but also taking in dig after dig from jealous peers. Usually the pressure seeps out by the kids in some ways going overboard proving to their friends that they’re not holier than thou. Of course, this is also the age when a little rebellious independence from your parents is healthy and almost unavoidable.
Altogether a tough mix for most.
Maybe she should have worked it in to her speech on day one, like right at the end an ‘oh by the way’, just to avoid the coming momentary onslaught of negative comments from the lefties...
I hope the Obama gang realizes this won't cost McCain any votes.
So? BFD
Obama would fully the support the daughter. If she wanted to slaughter the child.
From the linked, excerpted article:
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughters pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.
He would not force her to live with "HER MISTAKE" [his words people!!]
I'm not so sure we shouldn't do what the critics expect from us and adopt the practice of honor killings.
For you dense people, that's sarcasm.
No, the math doesn’t support them, but Kos and the Left blogosphere will claim that the “seriousness of the charges” forced Palin to admit to this fact, plus now you’re going to see the ‘Hypocrite Card’ played for the rest of the campaign...
Not that it lessens my support; it’s an unfortunate event, which the family is handling in the right and moral way.
Another contrast as Obama said if his daughters got pregnant they would be:
“punished with a baby?
......enough said!
Palin announces....not admits.
Get ready for President Obama. Practice your “Heil Obama” salute now.
I respectfully disagree. The only ones who will be turned off by this are the self-righteous among us. I would remind you of Jesus' words, "He who is without sin let him cast the first stone."
Anyone else is able to practice forgiveness and move on.
In my view this potential negative becomes a plus. Rather than hiding this little family problem, its front and center. Instead of 'aborting' the child - its keeping the child and an upcoming marriage as it should be.
And then there's the additional bonus of being able to put Bristol Palin up there, pregant, unmarried, no abortion, family sees this event as a blessing compared to Obambi's 'I don't want my daughters PUNISHED with a baby....."
It reaffirms the pro-life position people. Great bonus.
Yep. I can hear the media now...what kind of mother allows a 17 yr old daughter to get pregnant...did she not teach birth control....was she not present enough in her child’s life to teach her correctly...etc...
Man...the Libs are going to have a field day with this.
To me it’s no big deal, what did people expect her to do
say, “I’m Governor Palin and my daughter is knocked up?”
Sounds like they are dealing with it like any loving family
would.
