My first thought is that this sort of scrutiny has to be really hard on the 16-year-old girl in question. And my second thought was that IF this turns out to be true, I'll find it a really scary example - perhaps the most scary example of anything I've seen in a long time - of a politician who would do anything to get elected.

And if this IS true, Sarah Palin has opened her daughter up to a rough ride by exposing her family to the national press. The mainstream media only recently found itself badly burned when tabloids and bloggers completely scooped them on a salacious rumor (John Edwards' affair) that turned out to be 100% true. You can bet the press won't let this happen again, and I guarantee you that there are reporters in Alaska right this minute, poring over school, birth, and travel records, as well as looking at every photo of this family that they can get their hands on.

It’s taken this about two days to go from The Daily Kos to a blog run by a Scripps Howard newspaper in a small city. It will be interesting, though not enjoyable, to see how long before it makes it onto the six o’clock news and the daily papers.

No, it turned out *that* photo was generated by a Diebold printing machine funded by Christians, delivered by Blackwater, and Photoshopped by experts at Halliburton to give the illusion that she was pregnant.
In other news, The Rove Weather Machine (no relations to Weather Underground) steers another Cat. 5 hurricane towards New Orleans. Rove is reported stating “Ever since that group decided to do a rain dance last week during the D.N.C., the Kill-o-tron 2000 just hasn’t been the same.”
Skeptics are convinced that Rove is lying. Moonbeam Starflower, a member of the “Earth is a Fine Planet and Humans Should All Die (EFPHSAD)” movement has uncovered evidence that Rove is linked to the weather, Weather Underground, and Adobe Photoshop, and that all are manipulating pictures of the Alaska Governor to raise funds for enslaving all of humanity and destroying rainforests.

If "it" is true, small town tongues would be burning up the phone lines a long time ago. Especially from the Murkowsky/Stevens camps, let alone the D's.
I said before and I will say it again. I know how the blogosphere is and anything and everything will be out there and the drive-by media is going to drop this story out there at some point. This is politics and if there is a hint of a problem it will be out there. McCain might be up 10 points the day before the election and this stuff will be thrown out there if it comes to that.
I’ll give an example. Remember the Clinton alleged rape. We all know about that. Personally, I am inclined to believe it. But I also personally talked to one of his former department heads who told me she hung around him all the time and she was not to be believed. Now we believe her. Yet we have a denial from someone who knew him well. We are members of a jury. Who do we believe? What I know for a certain fact is that I wasn’t in the hotel where it took place. I didn’t see it happen. If we are to reach a clear and unambiguous decision we have to go on the facts. People’s testimony is not going to cut it. It inevitably comes down to hard forensic evidence.

I believe much of the venom springs from their extreme hatred of her religious beliefs. They cling to this story to bring her down (in their eyes).
The "horrible news" would be that Sarah Palin got at least a doctor, and possibly other parties to participate in a massive cover-up. Frankly, if she did something like that, she'd be unfit for high office.
I really do hope the MSM runs with this, it is absolutely untrue for the following reasons: 1) Sarah Palin way too much ethical integrity to even consider thinking about that, 2) No one in Alaska would give a damn if her daughter were pregnant, it's a very live-and-let-live state, and 3) Everyone knows that DNA would prove or disprove it. Why hasn't Silky's skank come forward? Because she KNOWS who the daddy is.
If Sarah Palin and her family were tortured and hounded in the media to the point where they offered up DNA to clear themselves, the resultant backlash of criticism would doom the Rat party all the way down the ticket.
Actually the odds that any woman under 30 years old - much less a women under 20 years old - conceives a fetus with Downs Syndrome is 1000 to 1. The rate for women under 20 years old is probably even lower. Source at NIH.gov
