NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday morning but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then.
New Orleans residents leave Friday via Interstate 10 westbound ahead of Hurricane Gustav.

Wonder how many won’t return after this evac.?
Folks, this storm, if it continues as predicted, is going to affect millions of good people, killing some of them and wiping out more, possibly including my parents. It will end up costing us every one of us money in one way or another.

We here in Memphis are expecting an Amtrack train here within the next 24 hours. Lots of evacuees coming. I hope it’s a different class of people from the one’s that came here three years ago. Lots of crime after the influx of Katrina refugees.

Not everybody is making jokes but go back and look at the comments here and on other threads.
As for why evacuations weren’t made mandatory earlier, they simply cannot order an evacuation down there every time the place is threatened. They already advised people to leave and the mandatory order comes in plenty of time for people to get out.
Most people are praying to the high heavens for you and your folks.

I think the RNC must postpone the convention. We can’t be hammering Obama and celebrating while fellow Americans are suffering. This looks like it might be a major major storm. Postpone the convention.
Going westbound on I-10 keeps the evacuees squarely in Gustav’s path! I would head north toward Memphis in this case.

How do they do that? (I'm not saying they shouldn't) The logistics must be a nightmare...and can they get the convention site at a different date?
