CRAWFORD Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's long-shot prospect for vice president is getting a push from conservative and other pundits in the lead-up to next week's Republican National Convention.
The latest flurry of speculation online and on cable television constitutes at least a third or fourth wave of chatter about Hutchison, whose name surfaces occasionally as a possible Republican vice-presidential candidate...

Interesting. That I haven’t heard.

I agree with my fellow Texans. This would be a BAD choice.
Currently, it's not that hard to be a Texas Senator. Just vote conservative and you'll be re-elected. When she first started, she would just copy Phil Gramms’ homework.
Cornyn is very engaged and involved on all the issues important to Texas, Ms. Hutchison is a pleasant placeholder.
While I don't think people give much weight to vice presidential debates, her only hope against Joe Biden would be to pull the “Hillary - Rick Lazio, mean man bullying helpless female” card.
She's never struck me as unusually bright or terribly passionate about conservative causes.
“IF HE PICKS KAY BAILEY HE WILL LOSE THE VOTE OF CONSERVATIVE TEXAS REPUBLICANS.”
Bullsh*t. Where are you going to go? Bob Barr? What you mean is “He’ll lose MY vote as I take my ball and go home!”. The rest of Texas will vote for her. What are they going to do? Vote for Barack Obama?
How about start thinking with your other head!
IMO, it’s the blind trashers out to create an ad nauseum argument in order to establish the “everyone knows” scenario and pretend a complete lie is the truth.
Posters on McCain’s blogs are pushing the Huckster, HARD!
I agree with you. KBH’s record, from all appearances, seems to be that of a pretty solid conservative. Perhaps not perfect, but none of them are. While many don’t want another senator, its not really a negative considering that the opposition ticket has no executive experience, either. And she brings 15 years experience in her current position.
Much like the primary field, I really don’t see a perfect candidate here. The only real negative of KBH seems to be age, but I’m much more concerned of whether she’s capable of doing the job or not. That age stuff sounds more like something the Dems would say.
So in the end, I would put her high on the list of possibilities. That’s not to say she’s my #1 choice, but she’s a good one, as far as I’m concerned. He could do a hell of a lot worse.
Considering her voting record, I’m finding it hard to see how anyone can honestly claim she “leans toward pro choice”.
I think it would be an outstanding pick. I hope she agrees to do it.

Good point. The important thing is not just to win, but to win with a VP that we can rely on to take over the presidency if it becomes necessary.
[The advice I give at the bottom would work even better for Condi Rice who could be the US’ Margaret Thatcher IMNSHO :)]
I wouldn’t be surprised if Kay Bailey (and Condi) had made a concerted effort to avoid women’s issues on purpose in order to focus on the military, international affairs, etc. Just about every woman I know would understand that once you claim “girl’s issues,” it’s a block when you want to go for the “boy’s issues.”
Kay Bailey isn’t as strong on pro-life issues as I’d like. She’s supported by WISH, hedges where possible on Roe v. Wade as “settled law of the land,” and came out way too strong on embryonic stem cell research.
Her staff tends not to be pro-life, judging by my conversations with them over the years. They deflect pro-life constituents, send out stock letters that indicate no one’s read the one it’s supposedly in response to, and shield the Senator from having to answer the tough questions.
I’ve gotten several “Mrs. N” letters at my office, when the “Dr. N.” greeting should have been very, very obvious. I never could get her endorsement when Graham and my Rep. nominated me to one of the Advisory Committees on women’s issues, and she declined all of my invitations to the meetings.
The ambivalence or pro-choice leanings of the Senator were confirmed a few years ago by one of her former staff members who was distressed over the change. She expressed this worry to both my Mama and myself.
On the other hand, she has kept her promise to follow Senator Graham’s votes on life.
She has certainly been neutral enough that it would be plausible for her to make a strong statement about life, about the lessons she’s learned that lead her to understand that life begins at conception whether in the body or the lab.
“Palin has 14 years of public service and business experience prior to that. Also:
Palin showed a committment to her pro-life conservative principles by not bowing to the pressure to abort her mentally-challenged child. Rarely are one’s convictions borne out by real-life circumstances, but Palin showed she’s willing to live her beliefs.
With a son in the military, Palin will be keenly aware of how her military decisions or the decisions she influences as vice-president will affect the men and women serving in the armed forces. With a son in the military, Palin and her family will have to grit their teeth along with other military families, as their loved-ones carry out the orders associated with those difficult decisions.
At 44, Palin would offer a refreshing balance to the McCain ticket and nullify any advantage Obama would have with his youth...Palin would effectively neutralize the female factor. Furthermore, Palin has a likeable style and toughness that neither Hillary nor Obama can match.”
Thank you for the post, and for the links! Governor Palin certainly seems to have a lot of positives. She and Cantor are both intriguing possibilities.
Tatt
My guess is Romney, too.
One more thing: Palin would be an excellent counter to Hillary.
Agreed.
She IS pro-choice.
I’m not pining for Palin, I’m just saying that she’d make a strategically/politically better choice than KBH.
Believe me, I’m hoping he choses a proven, rabid right-winger.
Fer cryin’ out loud, folks, can we get over this ‘woman thing’ on the ticket? Has ANYONE just seen what has happened in the democrat party? An odds on favorite to win at least the VP has just LOST.
The obvious VP pick has already been FULLY vetted by the Republican Party and given a full body MRI exam by the MSM and STILL managed to come within hair’s width of winning the nomination.
One day there WILL be a woman president but she will get there ON HER OWN MERITS and not by riding on the coat tails as VP or any male. It will be then and only then a woman has ‘broken the glass ceiling’.
If I remember correctly, KBH was accused by an aide (when she was TX treas.) of hitting her with a clip board---or something. There was a stink about something!
