-- In the area of gay marriage I think the truly conservative position is "Who cares?" --

Labeling is an area of argument for the sake of having differences, and in that sense, my urgent disagreement with your assignment of the label "conservative" is simply over a label.

Conservatives adhere to old rules, in large part without any more reason than "it's tradition." Libertarians are the "who cares" bunch.

In the area of gay marriage, the truly conservative position is "That's just wrong."

....”He said in the gubernatorial debate in the fall of 2002 that he supported abortion rights. He also said that he supported gay rights.

What changed between 2002 and 2005?

Reagan changed his position on abortion too. Cut Romney some slack. Even if you don’t believe he’s a sincere conservative, he walks the walk and is a superb debater who’ll kick Obama’s A$$.

It’s been patently obvious that Romney’s the one for weeks as he’s been the designated point man for McCain on the various media channels.

Over the label? (conservatives tend to not accept homosexuality as normal) Or over the subjective judgement?

Yes, you do. Cboldt and I hold the conservative position on gay marriage. You hold the live and let live position.

As for drugs, drugs are very different from abortion and gay marriage. Gay marriage would have wide reaching negative implications for society as a whole in my opinion. Abortion obviously already does. Drugs are already massively used in society and almost every respectable study on the matter done by a non-law enforcement source has shown that drug laws actually increase violent crime by as much as 65%. Filling the prisons with non violent drug offenders serving mandatory minimum sentences means that murderers and rapists and armed robbers are getting released early to make room for the “druggies”. I would prefer to keep the people with violent criminal histories in prison, even if it means that I don’t get to feel good about myself that I’m all “tough on drugs” like you are. Maybe you can comfort the people who have lost relatives and dogs to SWAT raids on innocent people’s houses. It’s okay- we’re from the government. We’re here to help. Mitt Romney for VP! Whoo!

He’s not going to be debating Obambi. He’s going to be debating Biden most likely.

I, on the other hand, am more than happy to mail McCain one dime, and then pull the voting lever against both he and Obama, and FOR electors pledged to a Conservative Alternative.

We disagree over what the term “conservative” means.

It is this type of hairsplitting - and I respectfully submit that it is on your side - that has put the Repubs in a bind.

BTW - I REALLY need to go to bed but I’ll gladly pick up this discussion at a later date.

How about you knock it off! There are some of us who have a line we will not cross. One of those lines for me is I will never cast a vote for someone who is pro-abortion. It would violate my personal code of what is right and wrong. So flail away, nothing will change my mind on that. If McCain goes with a pro abortion guy, I won't be casting a vote in the Presidential race this year.

You really need to learn to read, or read more carefully. Did you see where I said I was pro-life? Besides being pro-choice isn't the same as being pro abortion. You would cut off your nose to spite your face. And tell me just what would a pro-life VP do? How would he/she differ from a pro-choice VP. The answer is not at all. Again you need to learn how the US Government functions. Did you forget your civics? Did you ever take civics?
And by the way we just might get a couple of decent Supreme Court Justices with McCain. With Obama I can assure you we will get horrible Supreme Court Justices. Did you hear him in saying the Justices he would not appoint were Roberts, Thomas and Scalia? These are 3 of our 4 best Justices. So go ahead Rochelle and withhold your vote. Feel smug if you must. I just hope there are not too many of you knuckle draggers out there. You are the primary reason so many call the Republican Party the stupid party.

“If Romney was liberal he had all sort of license to raise taxes as governor, not fight spending. Yet he didn’t. The only thing anyone ever comes up with are fee increases adjusted for inflation, and many, many vetoes of spending legislation (a good thing). And a private health care initiative that has a mandate. And of course we are supposed to believe Romney controlled the court systems and the general court for the homomarriage and $50 abortions, as if it weren’t them the whole time”

Thank you, Norman, for again cutting through all the hype and bizarre propaganda to the truth of the matter.

I agree. Go Mitt!

Arguing over a label definition doesn't put objective people in any bind. I'm completely indifferent as to your definition of "conservative," and find your concern to be shallow. . You aren't alone. I think many people are prone to invest inordinate amounts of effort into defending labels. Especially labels that they intend to adopt as personal identifiers, or reject as defective.

No. We will not "knock it off". We are not intimidated by the likes of moral relativists like yourself.

How do you infer that I'm a moral relativist? Didn't I say that I was pro-choice? It looks like you need a course in reading comprehension. Sometimes in life we don't have the choices we would like. I voted against McCain in the primaries. I don't' like the guy but he will not be a disaster. Obama will be a disaster. And by the way if you don't like abortion you really won't like Obama. If Obama gets elected no small reason will be because of people like you.

Romney is acceptable to me, but then I am going to have to apply two noseplugs on 11/4 when I go to vote. I am still saddened that my guy Fred Thompson didn’t get anywhere with his campaign.
