Russia alarmed by US-Poland defense missile deal, calls Poland "a target"

(RTTNews) - The signing of an agreement that allows the United States to build a missile defense shield in Poland amid the backdrop of the invasion of Georgia drew severe criticism from Russia on Friday, who said that the deal is aimed at it.

In the strongest threat Russia has issued against a plan to establish missile defense elements along the borders of former Soviet ally nations, Russia's deputy chief of general staff, Colonel-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, warned that Poland has become a "target for attack" and that "such targets are destroyed as a first priority."

Addressing a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Russian resort of Sochi, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the deal "clearly demonstrates what we had said earlier - the deployment has the Russian Federation as its target."

The United States' chief negotiator of the deal, John Rood views the agreement important for the security of his country, Poland, and its NATO allies. Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin was quoted as saying that the project has "no relation to the Iranian missile threat but is aimed against Russia."

Yep, they are alarmed alright, they won’t be able to take Poland as easily as they took Georgia. F*** Russia and the horse they rode in on. Russia needs to go away permanently.

The shield could only prevent missiles like Iranian ones, not the Russian ones.
Russia knows this and is just trying to make a reason to bitch or take an improper action.

Actually, it does nothing regarding Russian missiles from what I heard, should help with Iranian ones though.

Patriot missles and the missle shield come with American soldiers. Not many but a trip wire that is vital to security in eastern Europe. Now to fast track Ukrainian admission to NATO and getting Americans in there too.

It’s perfectly natural for the US and Russia to alarm each other on a periodic basis.

What it does is put US Military assets in a former Warsaw Pact country. Ever play Risk? Russia is furious that we’ve got pieces in “their” neighborhood.

Patriot missles dont distinguish between Russian and Iranian missles.......

Except the Russians have thousands too many to stop and the Iranians can maybe muster a handful that can be stopped.

The Poles are so awesome, they more or less stepped up and took heat away from Georgia, or at least added to Russia’s plate.

I was listening to some defense experts on the radio and they were mentioning the shied would work regarding Iran, but not Russia.
I wouldn't mind if it was 100% and I hope it is so.

This is how to restrain an empire. If Russia make a push at the front, near-abroad poke Russia at the rear. Time for Poles and Baltic countries to step up.

If they don't, Russia will pick them off one by one. Then they all lose.

I think the deal is for 10 ABM’s to be hosted there, so it may be 100% effective against 10 ICBM’s.

Big difference is we had real leadership under President Reagan.
