It would not have to be nuclear..not yet anyway, and most certainly would not be preemptive. Preemptive is when you attack first, because you think the other side is planning to attack.
You can be sure that Putin has projected far enough ahead to be prepared for any contingency and if he thought it was in Russia's national interest to attack the West with both nuclear and conventional weapons, their silos would already be empty. The Russians have been busy developing *new* ICBMs, while we have retired our newest ICBM (MX-Peacekeeper) and have reduced the numbers of our Minuteman missiles.
The Russians are already attacking one of our friends. A few B-2s loaded with JDAMS would make a mess of the Lines of Communications of those Russian forces, especially the approaches to that tunnel. A few bunker busters on the tunnel itself would also be useful.
How can anyone be sure that a direct attack upon Russian positions with B-2 & JDAMs would not provoke an equivalent or greater response?
We would stand a better than even chance of climbing up Herman Kahn's ladder of escalation at least one or two rungs at a time, as I see it.

if for any reason, the United States decided to launch an invasion of New Brunswick,...The geographical parallel is right in front of us with Russia moving on Georgia. Well not quite. There aren't insignificant mountains, with very few passes, between Maine and New Brunswick. Makes a difference on one's options. The other front has to go through one heck of a gorge.

Geogia attacked South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The Georgian only attacked the South Ossetian separatists, after the latter attacked them. The Abkanzhians attacked the Georgians, and then the Russians came in through there. Or at least it was supposedly the Abkanzhians, could have been Russians, who could tell?

p.s. my survival supplies and my bug-out-bag and my escape plan are ALWAYS at the ready ... I was raised to rely on NO man NOR government for the safety and security of myself or my family.
YOU my FRiend, are a wise man.
To: mkjessup
Jeff my FRiend? It is no longer 'early'. It's not early for Georgia, but it is for the Ukraine, for Poland, and for the other nations Ronald Reagan helped free from Soviet tyranny, along with a few other countries that stand in the way of Putin's plans.

Nikos, we don’t put five carriers in a small radius. It’s suicidal. As for this situation, I have advocated all day that we do something more than talk.
I am still trying to figure out if that was the right thing to advocate. I may be as wrong as I can be.
I think you mentioned earlier, we should do something. Well, I think so too, but I’m not totally convinced of it.
Thank you for the comments.

I dont know. The home of the former US ambassador in Georgia is lovely. And up fairly high. I had not been to the embassy itself. Sorry, I was being a bit sarcastic. That photo is from the evacuation of the US Embassy in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam, a country which no longer exists. Thanks to the US not backing up it's friends as it promised it would. It was 1975, perhaps before your time?

The Georgian president got himself into this mess probably with inside provocation from Russian.
I think now is the time for the USA to watch and react accordingly.
I think this will make it easier for our response, when and if the Russians decide to put strategic bombers in Cuba.
Any president will tell these guys that these get them the hell out of the there or the US will blow them up.
