ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Sen. John Edwards has reacted to the news of her husband's affair, posting a blog titled "Today" on the liberal Daily Kos website and asking for privacy for her family.
In the blog, Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it. "This was our private matter," she writes.
She heaps blame on the news media for prying into her family's life, writing, "the toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown."
She disputes the National Enquirer allegations that her husband fathered a child outside of their marriage.
The Elizabeth Edwards blog on Daily Kos reads: "Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. None of these has been easy. But we have stood with one another through them all. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.
"John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007.

I was reading about this on another thread, and I actually see things a bit differently than most when reading her statement...
When she says the process became much easier after her diagnosis it could mean a couple things... One, that she gave him her blessing to continue the affair with the exception that he would stay by her side until she recovered, or passed on. Two, that when she was diagnosed he became more committed to the marriage... Honestly, with John’s apparent rendevous at the hotel recently, I’m guessing it was the first option. If she were convinced she were going to die - she may have given him permission to pursue the relationship, knowing he wouldn’t be alone after she was gone...
Now, this doesn’t excuse Edwards’ indiscretion. Nor does it excuse the “society or political wife’s” behavior (acceptance, and forgiveness after it becomes public knowledge). It would seem to me that unlike “regular” people these types of relationships are the same as your average marriage in the 50s when divorce was so looked down upon - so things just went on behind the scenes often with the wife knowing, but never saying anything (”boys will be boys”).
There are a bunch of ways these situations play out - especially as I mentioned if it is a “public” marriage. I’m assuming at this point there was some sort of agreement made between wife and husband regarding this affair - obviously he’s still seeing her (with or without Elizabeth’s knowledge). It’s not like the National Enquirer just “got lucky” finding him in that hotel that night.
Well, I’m just babbling now, but without knowing all the details no-one is really going to be right on the money with all the speculation going on...

Frankly, I wonder what they're sitting on about B. Hussein Obama...you know how much they love him...causes one to believe there might be tons of dirt even the conservative blogosphere hasn't found yet--but the dopes in the "Old Media" world are keeping under wraps.

So they are both lying scumbags who went on the campaign trail, lied to the public about his affair and used her cancer to play the victim card for the sympathy vote.
Neither of them deserves any sympathy at all.
It is too bad he didn’t win the nomination.
As the democrat nominee this revelation would have completely detroyed any chance for them to win the White House and probably would have hurt their numbers in Congress as well.
He was dropping in to remind her how much he didn't love her anymore.
What the media won’t tell you is that if the little boy, who was born in March, 2007, turns out to be Edwards’ son, then it follows that Edwards cheated on his wife while knowing she had cancer, because pregnancies last approximately 9 months. Doing the math, we would have to conclude that the kid was conceived no earlier than May, 2006, and as we all know, news reports of the return of Elizabeth’s cancer broke in March, 2006.

You are talking about the Clinton’s, “public marriage” also, wonder how many other politicians have that way of life. Hmmm
You make a good point as far as campaign finances and such - with regard to why this should be reported on. It will be interesting to find out if his (former?) mistress is independently wealthy (being a filmaker), or if she has “new found” wealth from 2006 on (especially after getting pregnant).
It’s such a shame for his family who has to deal with this fall-out over something they have nothing to do with (particularly his children). So, prayers for them...
I say this with some regret, Elizabeth Edwards is an enabler. She didn’t come out and tell the truth and hold her husband accountable. Instead, for political expediency she kept quiet and said nothing to allow his campaign to go forward.
