IN GENTLENESS THERE IS STRENGTH
The parents were devastated. Their young adopted daughter had died in an unusual accident. She suffocated when the drawstring on the hood of her jacket became caught in a playground slide. It was later learned their child was not the first to die this way. Design flaws in both the hood and the slide made this an accident waiting to happen.
Some people might have viewed this tragedy as an opportunity to sue the two major corporations for a lucrative settlement. The parents, however, refused. In an interview, the mother said she would have seen any remuneration as "blood money." She and her husband believed the leaders of the two companies never intended to harm her child or any other child. Instead of a lawsuit, the parents appealed to the clothing and slide manufacturers to correct the design flaws which had led to the death of their daughter. Both companies took immediate action. Today the parents are leaders in a campaign to promote child safety, and the companies involved have contributed substantially toward their cause.
It is not always wrong to sue. There are times when it is the prudent thing to do. It seems, however, that our society has become increasingly litigious, suing without discretion for profit and personal gain. In light of todays litigious climate, one cannot help but be moved by the choice of these parents not to sue. Instead they chose a "higher ground," earning not only the willing cooperation of both companies, but strong allies in their campaign to promote child safety as well. We might say they took the "pure, peaceable and gentle way" described in the third chapter of James in the Christian scriptures (James 3:17) as opposed to the adversarial way offered them by the courts. An ancient Native American saying reads, "In gentleness there is great strength." Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General to the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, put it this way, "Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as true strength." In the end, the gentle, peaceable way of these parents demonstrated the greater strength and wisdom.

It's going well. Chuck woke up feeling fine. His legs look normal.
We should know sometime next week what if aynthing the doctor wants to do next.
Been enjoying the visits from my aunt from Calofornia. Talked about lots of things.
Going to try to take Bo out to the lake sometime next lake. It'll depend on what goes on with Chuck and his leg.
Hot weather here. In triple digits. Too hot to do much of anything.

Tell Me The Story
All these things happened to them as examples, and . . . for our admonition. 1 Corinthians 10:11
Now that I have grandkids, Im back into the classic childrens Bible stories. Wide-eyed stories like David and Goliath, Noahs ark, and Jonah and the big fish quickly capture a childs imagination!
But theres a danger herenot with the stories themselves but rather with our attitude toward them. If we view them simply as kids stories, kind of like the Grimms Fairy Tales of the Bible, we miss the point.
The stories of the Bible were never meant to be outgrown. There are profound lessons to be learned from the amazing accounts of those who faced giants, floods, and fish!
Hundreds of years after the fact, the apostle Paul explained that the things that happened to Moses and the Israelites as they wandered through the desert happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition (1 Cor. 10:11). These stories are about us. They mirror the tensions we face daily as we too seek to apply Gods will and ways to the realities of our lives. They teach us of the treachery of sin, our desperate need to trust God unflinchingly, and the importance of staying faithful and true to Him regardless of what happens.
Dont ignore the old stories. You might be surprised what God wants to teach you through them.
We learn the blessed Word of God
To fix it firmly in our heart,
And when we act upon that Word
Its truth from us will not depart. D. De Haan
Stories from the past can give us pointers for the present.
