KUCHING: A misunderstanding over a small pet dog saw three stallholders attacked by a group of youths, resulting in one of the victims losing a part of his finger and sustaining a broken arm on Friday night.
Prior to the 9.30pm incident at a parking lot in Kota Sentosa, where a number of foodstalls operate, a young couple and a friend went to a stall selling fried kuey teow accompanied by their small pet dog.
The stall was operated by a 35-year-old man and assisted by his mentally-challenged younger brother who is also in his 30s.
Although it was unclear what sparked off the incident, the stallowner claimed to reporters that one of the youths began causing a scene when he accused his younger brother of kicking his pet dog.
When the mentally-challenged brother denied the accusation, the youth suddenly whipped out a cockspur and attempted to slash the man, but was prevented from doing by the stallholder, who leapt to defend his brother.
During the scuffle, the youth was cut on his palm by his own cockspur and he warned the two men to be careful as he would return with his gang for revenge.
Fearing for their safety, the brothers immediately started to pack up as soon as the youths left and were about to leave the area when the youths showed up along with several other persons brandishing iron rods, knives, a baseball bat and a kwang tao sword.
A fellow stallholder 51-year-old Mohd Suhaidi ,who witnessed the entire incident, told reporters that the sight of the armed group sent other stall owners and patrons fleeing for their safety as the group charged at the two brothers and attacked them with the weapons.
He said they were able to deflect the blow from the kwang tao using a plastic table, but were unable to fend off the others and were beaten with iron rods and baseball bat.
Meanwhile, Suhaidi said the elder victims father-in-law, who operates a drinks stall nearby, rushed to help his relatives with a steel pipe but was slashed with the kwang tao which severed part of his finger on the right hand.
In the ensuing melee, the 60-something mans right arm was also broken by the youths, who then fled from the scene.
The brothers, who suffered bruises on their backs and arms, later lodged a police report while the old man was sent to a private medical centre for treatment. Police are investigating.
Not yet know what a kwang tao sword is.
Sorry, mistake. Not Indo. this is a Malaysian story.
I am not sure if I even want to know what kuey teow is.
What is a cockspur?
I was wondering the exact same thing: “exactly what the Devil is a kwang tao sword?”
Or a “cockspur”, for that matter.
Does anyone in FReeperland have any pictures of these elusive weapons?
I dunno, but never bring a cockspur to a kwang tao sword fight.
Right then is when I'd pull out a gun.
Cockspur = cheap Barbados Rum (don’t ask...)
Chinese stir fried noddle dish, popular in Singapore & Malaysia.
It is a very good noodle dish. A favorite in our house from the Thai/Malay place down the street.

Used by this guy in Chinese historical legend ...
Thanks for that.
Hmmmm... it’s got a long, swept cutting edge on what appears to be a weighted blade. Notch on the unsharpened side — presumably to catch opponent’s bladed weapon? — and a long handle — presumably as much for balance as for reach? And a tassle — presumably for feints?
I’m guessing it would be used very similarly to a Maori taiaha: a combination blade/quarterstaff? Except it would focus on slicing rather than stabbing? With the practitioner doing a fair bit of hopping around dramatically?
I see, I should have taken literally. Odd thing to carry around, except for a weapon. However, it’s no wonder he cut his own palm with it.
Iron pipes~!!
BTW, the whole area is under intense development for mineral resources, advanced agricultural technology, oil and politics.
Singapore used to be part of the country (it's been independent a long time), but is very much part of the same economic zone.
Has more than it's fair share of Moslems, and By Law native born Malaypeople must be Moslem. Chinese, about a quarter of the population, repreent a cluster of coastal and central China provinces.
Wait until these ol'boys get guns and stuff.
This is the lead story at the Borneo Post:
The story is fairly long, describing the benefits of locals to grow vanilla, world markets, etc.
Why depressing? These are the story's first two sentences:
PARIS Hilton loves it so much that she uses it as one of the main ingredients for her Just Me eau de parfum spray, which, in Malaysia, is priced at RM198.99 per 50ml bottle and RM243.99 for 100ml.God I hate globalization.Hiltons good friend Britney Spears is also a fan who includes it in her line of perfumes.
Shermy got it right in #5. They are frequently razor sharp and designed to be laced or otherwise affixed to a rooster's legs to slake the bloodlust of cockfight aficionados.
Since this is a tropical area "growth" and "devlopment" is necessarily going to include agriculture.
Did you check out the highrises being built there?
Remember, always, that little more than a century ago people were still doing headhunting on Borneo, and now only the Moslems do that! (bwahahahaha)
Judging by the names, and the presence of the dog the stall owner is Malay (Muslim) but the “youths” aren’t; they could either be Borneo Dayaks (not Muslim) or more likely Chinese given that they were eating Chinese food.
You’re right about the ethnic/religious mix in this area, it’s precisely these sort of minor incidents that flare up into serious inter communal conflagrations. Happens all the time in neighbouring Indonesia.
