Anything can be a pre-shock if it is followed by a larger quake.

All of Southern California in on earthquake mode, the PDs and FDs are checking all infrastructure, that is taking a while. There are some reports of damage in Pasadena. Most large buildings have been evacuated and will remain that way until they are checked by authorities.
In earthquake mode, all fire equipment is pulled out of quarters....some departments are setting up their EOCs or mobile command vehicles.

We don't sweat the small ones like this here in California.Speak for yourself :) I almost went for cover here in Highland.

Preliminary magnitude is 5.8. Epicenter is Chino Hills, approximately 50 miles East of my location. It's been difficult for me to get online.
It was at first a mild jolt, followed by a hard shake, then several more hard shakes, then continual shaking. Things rocked here and rocked for too long for my comfort level. Some things fell off shelves.
Caller into local live TV newscast says that Disneyland is evacuating all riders off the rides right now as a precautionary procedure. They're evacuating all buildings to check for damage. According to the caller, all guests appear calm.
Earthquake Ping List. If you would like to have your name added to this list or removed from it, please FReepmail me.

Let's stop and ask an unthinkable question. If it flattened the entire state...whom in the world would send aid to us?

It was only a 5.8. We don't sweat the small ones like this here in California. Exactly!

I got in on that 6.5er back in 1971. Found out about it when it threw me out of bed flat on my face. I, too, have been through floods, hurricanes, typhons and all that kind of stuff -- but nothing scared me as much as that cotton-pickin' earthquake -- for what seemed like an eternity, it shook so hard I had one helluva time getting to my feet.
Don't want NO MO of them things. We moved to georgia shortly after. Great!! Now we got tornadoes that seem partial to the Atlanta metro area.

I'm in Chula Vista. Neighbors felt it because they are all outside talking. I was busy printing pictures and all of a sudden the cat looked like it saw a ghost and ran around in circles all fluffed out. My cat is weird though so I figured he was just having a moment.

Felt it big time here onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
First time I've ever felt one onboard the ship.
Sure felt stronger than a 5.8.

I’ll take a earthquake over a hurricane or tornado anyday.
They say this one was 7 to 8 miles deep.. fingers crossed

Being a veteran of most eq’s in California since the SF one listed here, I don’t miss them at all.
The Northridge earthquake occurred at 4:30 a.m. local time on January 17, 1994. Northridge is located about 30 km northwest of Los Angeles. This earthquake had a 6.9 moment magnitude. The hypocentral depth was 19 km. The duration was about 10 seconds to 20 seconds. The earthquake occurred along a “blind” thrust fault, close to the San Andreas fault. Note that a blind fault is a fault which does not extend to the surface. In other words, it is buried.
The Northridge earthquake was the worst earthquake in the Los Angeles basin since the San Fernando earthquake in 1971, which had a 6.7 magnitude.
