Joseph Lieberman, the lapsed Democrat from Connecticut, strolled into the weekly lunch of the Senate Democrats, unaccompanied by a food taster.
He greeted his colleagues, including some who felt he should not have been there last Tuesday. He ate his lunch (salad, eschewing the macaroni and cheese) and sat through a discussion about gasoline prices and Medicare.
Then the conversation veered into the danger zone, the presidential election - specifically, Senator John McCain's recent votes, or nonvotes, on energy policy.
At which point Lieberman walked out.
"I just didn't feel it was appropriate for me to be there," Lieberman explained the next day.
"It was the right thing to do," said Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, the Democratic whip, who said that a colleague approached him afterward to complain about Lieberman's showing up. "This is a delicate situation," Durbin summed up.
It has grown increasingly so for Lieberman, once his party's vice-presidential candidate and now a self-styled "independent Democrat." He has zigzagged the country on behalf of McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and, in recent weeks, amplified his criticism of Senator Barack Obama to a point that has infuriated many of his Democratic colleagues.
At least two have asked Lieberman to tone down his rhetoric against Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, two colleagues said, and at least three have advised Lieberman against speaking at the Republican convention, a prospect he has said he would entertain.
Clearly, Lieberman's already precarious marriage with the Democrats has reached a new level of discord and could be approaching divorce, if not necessarily a remarriage into the Republican Party. The strain has been rooted largely in Lieberman's steadfast support for the Bush administration's engagement in Iraq and his hawkish views on Iran.

I hope Joe has better luck this time as a VEEP candidate than he did last time.
It appears cornering Lieberman in the Senate a few weeks ago didn’t produce the results B-HO intended.
AKA: Fair weather asses.
Joe has no dim friends... he does not hate America.
LLS
Since he is not a democrat I don’t see how they can ask him to tone down anything. OTH, he shouldn’t be going to dem meetings either and he shouldn’t caucus with them. They have showed how they feel about the guy so why does he bother?
As I recall, he was stabbed in the back and thrown under the bus by the Democrats in favor or a megga-bucks moonbat. He does not owe them a damn thing.
The dems have made it clear they will throw Lieberman out of the party next year as part of their reaching out to all Americans and changing to a more inclusive politics. Barf.
What exactly did those “friends”do for Joe when Soros sandbagged him by megafunding his primary opponent?
I am thinking that when he was abandoned by the party in the Dem primary for a leftwing loon, and he then came back and won the general as an independent...that is wheen some of those ties were ‘frayed’.
I wouldn’t call those people his “friends” since they stabbed the guy in the back during his Senate run. Joe seems to be the only Dem with some courage.
What exactly did those friendsdo for Joe when Soros sandbagged him by megafunding his primary opponent?

The liberal Dims have been urinating all over Joe for a very long time...and he still associates with them?? Shows you how important a total lack of self-respect is to surviving on the Washington dung-heap. I guess it is still something to covet, being a member of the most disrespected and disliked Congress in the history of America.
Such a proud credential. Become a Repub Joe -— being a RINO is very acceptable to Repub voters, so what the hell...
Joe caucuses with the Dims, and the Dims control committee assignments. So they can strip Joe of his Chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and indeed kick him off of all of his committees if they wished.
Lieberman's philosophical ties to Israel are stronger then his (hopefully soon to be former) politically expedient ties to democrats.
I think if Joe traded sides today, he wouldn't be the most RINO of the bunch. I think the GOP and the dims could have a "prisoner swap" and move two or three to the other side, and folks would probably be better off for it.
Lately on the liberal media, I've seen people complaining about Obama, that he isn't sufficiently lib! It's as if the psycho-leftie portion of our nation is ready to flat out come out and create a Labour party, a Socialist party, or what-have-you, and leave the Democrats positioned more left-center instead of left.
Folks like Nancy Pelosi, yeah, they're your Labour party leaders. They aren't idolizing the days of FDR, they're idolizing the days of Stalin.
Johnny Boy is going to have to make up his mind who his base really is. You can’t play both sides of the fence, what does Rush ALWAYS say about a middle of the roader?? They get run over.
McCain’s pandering to the enviromental movement tells me a whole lot about what he really is. How ‘bout BIG BEER Johnny Boy??
This election, more than any other will decide whether we become slaves or remain (relatively speaking) free citizens. If slaves, then the Constitution will not save us or the form of government we cherish (cherish? Not anymore...), there will be no recouping the lost ground other than through drastic means.
Read history. There’s always enough minions to enforce the oppressor’s edicts and pogroms—always—don’t kid yourselves.
Well, you have to remember, back in 2006 he promised to get a democratic president elected. Especially galling for democrats is the nominee is the same guy who actively campaigned for him in the democratic primary.
Needless to say, as Joe stabbed the dems in the back for some perceived slight, he’ll stab the GOP in the back without a second thought.
Joe Lieberman doesn’t care about America, he only cares about Israel and himself (I’m not sure in what order), the GOP & McCain would be wise to keep him at arm’s length.
He owes them exactly nothing.
BTTT!
