Tunes For The Troops

**Artist Showcase**

Sarah Brightman was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England to Paula and Grenville Brightman, the eldest of six children. At age three, she took ballet lessons at the Elmhurst School and appeared in local festivals. At age eleven Brightman attended the Arts Educational boarding school for jazz and acting, an experience she recalled in an interview with The Independent as troublesome. Brightman was teased by other students and ran away once, but nevertheless she remained at the school.

Later, she auditioned for London's Royal Ballet but was rejected. At sixteen, in 1976, Brightman joined the dance group Pan's People, a staple on the BBC series Top of the Pops. She left a year later to lead Hot Gossip, a mixed dance act who appeared regularly on The Kenny Everett Video Show. The group, whose routines were more provocative than those of Pan's People, had a chart-topping disco hit in 1978 with "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper", a space-themed track which sold half a million copies and reached number six on the UK charts. The group released a follow-up single, "Adventures of the Love Crusader", six months later, but it was less successful, failing to chart on the UK's top 50.

Brightman, now solo, released several more disco singles in subsequent years under Whisper Records; these included "Not Having That!" and a cover of the song "My Boyfriend's Back". None of these, however, were as prominent as "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper".

Gidday, Kiwi...summer is progressing. It would be nice if we could get some rain, altho I’m only complaining a little, as our need is not nearly as bad as California and other lower 48 states.

How are your knees doing? Patrol tonight?

We’re now into winter, which in Auckland means rain, wind, and sometimes hail. No snow, no frost (as yet)...

> How are your knees doing? Patrol tonight?

My knees are doing OK so far, thanks. I’ve lost 40 lbs since February which is helping alot (that’s roughly equivalent to a small sack of concrete that I don’t have to carry ‘round)

We Patroled Auckland CBD last nite, and were lucky enough to stop a violent assault. Kudos to “Kimodo”, one of our smaller female members: she did all the hard work while we all stood back and watched. I don’t know who was more surprised: the assailant or his victim!

None of us were too surprised, tho’ — it’s not for nothing is she in charge of the CBD Chapter.

We were on TV last Monday nite / Tuesday AM, so lots of cars honking at us on Patrol, people going “hey, we know you! Guardian Angels!” I still get a real buzz out of that.

Tonite will be quiet, as it is raining quite hard and it is cold. Bad Guys don’t like to be uncomfortable, to Patrol is likely to be short and sweet.

Glad to hear that the knees are doing less work, and patrols are doing well.

OK, I’ve fallen asleep twice now. I’m off to bed. Safe patrol tonight.
