At one time, Limbaugh did his program from a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper he dubbed, with tongue-in-cheek grandiosity, the Excellence in Broadcasting Building. These days, he mostly broadcasts out of a studio in Palm Beach, Fla., which he calls the Southern Command, and describes on the air as a heavily fortified bunker.
In fact, Limbaughs show emanates from a nondescript office building on a boulevard lined with tall palms. There isnt even a security guard in the lobby. The elevator opens directly onto a pristine anteroom furnished in corporate glass and leather. An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption Americas Anchorman, reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the countrys most admired and reviled figures.
The anteroom was empty when I stepped off the elevator one afternoon in mid-February. Limbaugh receives very few visitors at work, and no journalists from the hated mainstream media. When I was buzzed into the control room, I was met by Bo Snerdly a very large man in a Huey Newton beret who glared at me. Are you the guy whos here to do the hit job on us? he demanded in a deep voice.
Absolutely, I said.
Snerdly, whose real name is James Golden, held my eyes for a long moment before bursting into emphatic laughter.
Its just that we arent used to seeing reporters here, said a woman named Dawn. She is a stenographer whom Limbaugh hired in 2001, after he went deaf. These days he has a cochlear implant that enables him to hear callers, but Dawn sends him real-time transcripts of on-air conversations, just in case.
The media doesnt know about this place, she said. They dont know where we are.

I think it's fair to say both are true!
Great post .... I really enjoyed the read and what a great picture of the “great one”
The man has a cat and smokes cigars. A few candles couldn’t hurt, LOL.
Rush has enough money to hire a battalion of operators from Blackwater. I doubt someone with his profile would go unguarded.
Rush has made no secret of liking “the good life”. Doesn’t surprise me that he has somebody do a lot of stuff for him. Whatever...
If I had his money I’d have a house full of servants, too, and would be proud of it.
I listened to an NPR interview of the writer yesterday. The NPR guy was livid that Limbaugh had been portrayed so positively.
After reading the entire piece, I actually found it to be pretty fair and informative. While I still don’t like the “hit scouting report” aspect discussed above, I no longer think that was intentional by the writer.
BTW, someone above asked if Rush was a billionaire. The article mentions that Rush “toys with the idea of buying an N.F.L. franchise.” If true, that means he’s almost certainly in the billionaire range, if not well within it. N.F.L. franchises, even down-on-their-heels ones, don’t come cheap!
Late Period Limbaugh
Is Rush pregnant? I had better read the whole thing.
I’m surprised that the article was as fair as it was. I wasn’t surprised that Rush was unafraid to meet questions about his pain killer addiction forthrightly. People, especially on the left, wanted to see him be forced to embrace the “victim” stance and the subsequent weakening that would bring to his image and ideology, and he was smart enough and honest enough to not do it. I applaud that.
He said on his show that he liked it. I think it's great.
Laughing...I thought I was the only one who thought that.
The picture makes Rush look like a satanic Archie Bunker. But the article was pretty fair and informative. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into his life.
LOL! Yes, read the whole thing ...
Just because he did not see men with guns does not mean they are not there. Rush is not a dope.
Savage claims to broadcast from a bunker
Mark Levin claims to broadcast from a bunker
John Gibson claims he broadcasts from a bunker.
I believer a few other conservatives claim to broadcast from bunkers.
1. It's old. Think up something new.
2 It's not a great advertisement for their state of mind.
No kidding. It was probably easy to fool this interviewer.
