In case Iran’s interests in the region are jeopardized, it will shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz and will not allow the others to use it, Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Hassan Firuzabadi warned here on Saturday.

“The Strait of Hormuz being open is of considerable importance for us but if our interests are ignored, it is all clear that we will close the strait” Firuzabadi stressed.

Addressing the U.S. troops in the region, he said “The U.S. army belongs to its government and should not be abused by such warlike and extremists as George Bush and the Zionists”.

They can try and fail again if they wish.

They’re sure try, that’s not new. I guess we’ll learn how good the Sunburn really is. That is, if they ever manage to launch one.

They tried that once with mines years ago when Ronald Reagan was President. They must have thought they were dealing with Jimmy Carter. We blew them out of the water.

They must think they see a drop in oil prices coming. These sort of threats always pop up when they think the market is about to turn on them. Markets are emotional and they have learned to play on that along with their buddies in some other oil exporting countries.

it will shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz

Problem (for them) is, they can't.

“I poop on Irans threat to close the straights of Hormuz”

It was closed down before, years ago - think they can’t/won’t?

Now, what comes after that - well, it won’t be good. I just heard Newt Gingrich say today what I’ve repeatedly been saying - the best solution by FAR is that our covert ops (and cooperation from some other countries wouldn’t hurt, either!) need to efficiently remove that administration - it could be done without obvious military aggression or casualties. He reeled off (to a young questionner) about 20 or more examples of how we’ve been able to do such things before, from the 40’s through recent years, preventing more countries than I realized from becoming communist. Key to this is always excellent ground intelligence, but he pointed out that each time Iran’s had an election and put ahmedinejad back in, 30-40 other hopefuls have been knocked out. They’d be an excellent starting point (with much vested interest) for inside recruitment in this mission.

Offhand I would say hit all their military installations so there is minimal command and control

I would not doubt that Iran could/would close down the straight... in 96 they tried to close it down so the nimitz couldn’t get in.... or leave.... they are just playing a very high stake game of brinksmanship.... they may close it but it would probably be the last act of a desperate man

I’ll bet oil goes to 50 after Israel wacks Iran and we get drawn in and wack them too. A fitting finale for the Bush presidency

“That is, if they ever manage to launch one.”

you bring up another point Newt made in the cspan forum - once they actually become nuclear, it can be delivered in a multitude of ways other than “launching” (which would be detected and stopped by intel before reaching the air) - such as transporting by plane, ship, vehicles, etc.

launching is the least of the worries. they just MUST be stopped BEFORE becoming nuclear.
