Here is the communique we got from corporate:

We have great news to report. At long last, our 3 colleagues have been rescued from captivity in the Colombian jungles. Three Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems employees, Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, and Keith Stansell, kidnapped five years ago by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), were freed by the Colombian military a short time ago. This is also pretty much “it” for the FARC.

They killed their main PR/communications guy early this year, Tirofijo(sureshot) the main FARC guy died of natural causes months ago, and now they’ve lost their highest profile hostages.

Not to mention, desertions are way up.

Mono JoJoy is still out there, but these guys are becoming more irrelevant by the minute.

I’m also very interested on Chavez’ response and the semi-FARC sympthasizers in the Colombian government.

John McCain could have went into the jungle and rescued those people himself, and still there would be a concentrated cadre of FReepers who would show up to tear him down. I'm just sick of it. After the things that the Dems and Weasel Clark have said about this man in the last days, it is just so disheartening to see those same kind of attacks here.

Doesn’t this sorta look like the Columbian government could have done this any time they wanted to?

They probably could not just go in any time and gotten a successful rescue. They have tried on several occasions, and made a good effort in a dangerous situation. They've spotted the hostages a few times, but were unable to rescue them successfully, mindful of an incident last year when several Colombian hostage politicans were killed in a FARC "friendly fire" incident. Over time, the Colombian army has been able to disrupt a lot of FARC's command and control structure, and that probably helped the rescue effort today.

It's really a miracle that the hostages were rescued alive. Sometimes the better thing to do is wait for the right opportunity.

And now Uribe can take off the gloves and get more aggressive against FARC. Hopefully, the lefty politicians like Bentancourt have learned a lesson and will stay out of rebel-held areas as the next offensive unfolds.

The Colombian press conference had a military person saying there are still over 700 hostages (40+ military personel).

First I will say McCain is not my candidate. Given the two choices of McCain versus a terrorist sympathizing racist hate America/whitey Obama, I will gladly vote for McCain. Since we’re not moderators, but playing them on FR, your point is a good one, indylindy: the thread topic suggests that McCain is somehow to be credited with the release of the hostages, but having been given the opportunity to produce any such evidence, instead we are all told to “shut up” and you are called a “smart ass”.
The McCainiacs are especially peckish today. They must have just seen the latest polls.

I too think it’s a great thing. I am impressed that they are still alive. I am impressed that they were freed alive.

I am happy for them.

This was as coincidental to McCain’s visit as the Iranians releasing the American hostages the day Reagan was sworn in. NO damned coincidence at all.
