NEW YORK -- CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman" tied its lowest-ever adults 18-49 rating last week.
"Late Show" averaged a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49, Nielsen Media Research said. That is its lowest ever for an original since the program premiered in 1993, though not the lowest for the show: It has hit 0.9 several times, most recently in late December when it was in reruns because of the WGA strike.
Meanwhile, "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" averaged a 1.3 rating in the demo, its biggest margin of victory against "Late Show" in four months. "Late Show" tied for second place in the demo rating with ABC's "Nightline," though "Nightline" had more viewers in the demo. Both "Tonight" and "Late Show" showed drops in viewers and the demo.
I think Letterman is really funny. He falls down, however, with his obvious liberalism. He knows nothing about politics. He should stick to being a funny man. I don’t watch him any more because I can’t get past his liberal attitudes.
How long does the network have to hold on to losers?
Rather, Couric, Letterman have been losers for a LONG, LONG time.
Ron Popeil could beat that if he would ever stop counting his money and bring out a new product.
It's always the same old thing.
Harry Smith in the morning, Katie Couric in the evening, and David Letterman at night.
A Trifecta . . always in the ratings cellar.
I think his political views - which he’s been voicing more - are really turning people off.
How about some Ginsu Knives? Those were amazing . .
I could easily watch 30 minutes of Billy May slicing and dicing.
Maybe because the Bush jokes were getting old!
Not only is letterman not funny but he’s ugly.
The night I saw Letterman fawning all over his first guest, the Obamessiah, many many months ago now, was the last time I ever tuned in to Late Night.
I knew Letterman to be a fool, I just had never realized how BIG a fool he truly is.
1995...the last time I watched his show.
I used to love Letterman. However, in recent years he’s gotten plenty political. It comes across as the usual liberal whining and moaning. It is unfunny and exactly what CBS doesn’t need. I can’t watch him anymore.
Oh yeah! The LAST time I watched David Letterman was the interview he did with George Bush before he became President. For MONTHS he was making fun of George Bush's intelligence.
And then finally GB proved he had the balls to show up on David's show. So what did Letterman do? He asked GB about his "investments" because much was made of the fact GB was worth about $20 million. And GB said he doesn't know because it is in a blind trust to prevent conflict of interest. David completely ignored GB response and asked, "So what companies are you invested with?" And George replied, "I don't know... otherwise it wouldn't be a blind trust!"
The look of David's face was absolutely priceless. I lost all respect for him and never watched another one of his shows...
Leno`s charm is that he makes himself appear harmless.
Letterman not only appears, but is angry, and sarcastic. That ain`t funny, and his schtick wore out 15 years ago.
Jimmy Kimmel would be preferable as the replacement for the Tonigh Show. Conan Obrain !? Ufff, worse than old letterman.
I abandoned Letterman long ago. Too weird, not really funny, WAAAAAYYYYY too liberal.
Leno will at least throw some jibes at the libs, although I can only stomach him in small doses. I will watch his headlines on Mondays, they are worth staying up late.
he’s turned into an old bitter coot
I hate to sound like an old-timer, but both Jay Leno and David Letterman are so untalented compared to Johnny Carson.
Carson could do standup, interviews, and lots of comedy skits,
as well.
Neither Letterman or Leno are as versatile or watchable as Johnny Carson was.
He is getting hard to look at and he’s not funny. Rather, he’s silly and dull.
He still thinks he is cute, but that is the delusion that money brings
It's true that CBS has a high tolerance for "losers," like that Charles Osgood Sunday Morning show that no one watches. This is also the network whose CEO's wife, Julie Chen, has her very own show. She didn't exactly get it through nepotism, but it does explain why she's still around.
But maybe there's something almost admirable in a major corporation, renouncing glitz and showiness and even talent, and running a division or two like a local talent show or country store cracker barrel. And look on the bright side, Dave and Katie save them from making another CSI spin-off.
