DC Del. Holmes Norton calls city thugs "more skilled" than residents
Grandy & Andy Morning Show, WMAL, DC ^

Go to minute 2:40 through 4:59 on the link above.

She also said that thugs "will have a jump on you".

D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton's comments are absurd and idiotic. Actually, "idiotic" is putting it mildly.

This is an interview she did last evening with 630 WMAL, Washington, D.C.

This ruling put the real thugs in their place, the DC fascist city council/government.

Right now, the city has no federally licensed gun dealers at all, which is largely the result of the ban and very stringent zoning laws, which severely restrict where explosive devices can be sold. Thing is, the powers that be in the District — the mayor, the city council, the police — are still very against the sale of guns, so my guess is they’re going to do everything in their power to restrict it. At this point, I bet they use the zoning laws to keep the stores out.

Is such a strategy legal?

Well, I’m sure it’ll get challenged in court.

Won’t there be a huge demand among local entrepreneurs to open stores?

I’m really not so sure. Thing is, the eastern quadrant of the city is going through this renaissance in violence. If you’re a gun dealer looking for a place to break into D.C., do you want to take on the liability of opening a store in a crime-ridden area where the likelihood exists that you’ll be robbed and, in any event, you’ll have to run extremely tough background checks? Or, on the other hand, do you try to go to a more affluent part of the city where you’re going to get fought tooth and nail on zoning ordinances?

What about neighboring states like Virginia and Maryland? Won’t D.C. residents just drive out there, buy their guns, and bring them back?

No, because transporting handguns across state lines violates federal law. To legally obtain a handgun, someone from the District would have to drive to a store in Virginia or Maryland, which, after doing the requisite background check, would have to ship the gun to a federally licensed store in D.C. And so long as no stores exist in D.C., of course, that’s not going to happen.

Sounds like the practical effect of the ruling today — at least in the District — will be minimal, at least for a while.

That’s right. The practical implications aren’t going to take hold right away. Even if it was something I really really wanted to do, if I was really hankering to have a firearm, it would be no easier today than it was yesterday.

Very interesting. Thanks much for taking the time.

You bet.

It’s curious that people who so frequently blather about rights are so energized to take an obvious right away.

Gun control is a scam. The people who want gun control are also the people who don’t want the criminal punished for the crime. So the gun control advocates put the blame on the gun.

She’s just protecting her peeps.

People should be aware that gangs can get their representatives elected to local government.

A little observed federal law already prohibits buying firearms across state lines. If you go to VA and are not a citizen, the dealer must ship the gun to a dealer in your state. If you buy one from a private party and carry it back to your state, you have broken the law.

If the denizens of D.C. don’t like the district administrators/representatives, they need to GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE OR RECALL THEM!!!!

Well, she is right in the sense that an 18 year old gang banger probably does have faster reflexes than does this 62 year old. The logical corollary, of course, is that I should make sure to shoot the gang banger before he thinks he has any reason to shoot me.

She's also right in the sense that the average gangbanger probably has more practice and experience in using an handgun than the average law-abiding DC resident. They haven't had any practice or range time in 32 years.

Yes, she’s an elected official who, by her own words, was elected by a bunch of people less skilled than street thugs. I guess that’s why the press doesn’t have to put the “D” after her name.

I heard a clip this morning in which she asked the rhetorical question, "Are we now going to encourage shoot-outs between criminals who may be very experienced with guns and homeowners who aren't?"

What a stupid piece of work she is...!

Let's accept her stupid premise a valid argument. The answer is yes. Do you become a victim like the guy found shot in the back yesterday or do you try to save your life in a "shoot-out"? Hell Yes!

Obviously, Ms. Norton believes the public is better served by being unarmed in the face of a shoot-out with criminals who are very experienced with guns.
