North Pole could be ice-free this summer, scientists say

(CNN) -- The North Pole may be briefly ice-free by September as global warming melts away Arctic sea ice, according to scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

It's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice, which was frozen last autumn, will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole, Serreze said.

Serreze said it's "just another indicator of the disappearing Arctic sea ice cover" but that it is happening so soon is "just astounding to me."

"Five years ago, to think that we'd even be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it," he said.

"If you talked to me or other scientists just a few years ago, we were saying that we might lose all or most of the summer sea ice cover by anywhere from 2050 to 2100," Serreze said. "Then, recently, we kind of revised those estimates, maybe as early as 2030. Now, there's people out there saying it might be even before that. So, things are happening pretty quick up there."

No, the North Pole ice is pretty thin, and it may thaw at the Pole. There is something going on with the ice caps at either pole. That’s observed fact. You’re confusing measurements and observations—environmental science—with environmentalism, which is the emotional BS.

Almost forgot this linky goodness.

Barrow Ice Cam

Looks pretty much the same as it always does this time of year.

Then there's one of my fav places on the planet...

Svalbard

My wife and I are "celebrating" our 30th aniversary in August. She was whining about me never taking her anyplace and asked if we couldn't take a 2nd honeymoon. I said OK, howsabout Svalbard because the temperature is pretty much the same as our bedroom.

Wife was not amused.

Gee, what a bunch of intellectual gaints. Who would have ever thought that the Polar Icecap might revert back to it’s state during the 10th Century when Greenland was discovered by the Vikings...

Don’t you understand? A .2 degree C rise in global temperature that stopped 8 years ago is responsible for this. The 8 or 10 volcanos spewing millions of tons of 2500 degree lava right under the ice cap has absolutely nothing to do with this. /sarc off

I hear you, neighbor-- sometimes, you just have to stand back, and laugh at all this crazy, err, "stuff."

I swear, Pan or Puck seems to be running things, now.

If there is no snow and ice, the “scientists” at the National Snow and Ice Data Center won’t have any jobs. Maybe they can form the National Sunny and Warm Data Center and get research grants that way.

“As of June 7, preliminary data show that the vast expanse of ice at the top of the world is some 55,800 square miles smaller than it was on the same date last year, according to University of Colorado researcher Sheldon Drobot. In May, sea-ice extent was slightly large than in May 2007. But the melt rate during the month – some 3,000 square miles a day – was faster, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.”

Well, whether whats happening in the Arctic is man-made or natural, it`s still going to have a big impact on weather patterns.

This is the coldest Spring I can remember in a long time. Must be because of Bush sending the volcanoes underneath the poles I guess.

Do I need the /sarcasm here?

And how do you know if this will affect weather patterns when no professional meteorologist knows? They don't even know when or why the jet stream will change its path yet, and their weather progostications 3 days out are about the percentage of the designated hitter. Not even James Hanson (sp?) knows this, in spite of his drivel about jailing oil execs.

What they are doing is a form of "cold reading", trying to prove their psychic powers to establish their forecasting credibility. This is part of an age old con man technique for pulling off a swindle. Hang on to your wallet. From this link:

Cold reading

Cold reading refers to a set of techniques used by professional manipulators to get a subject to behave in a certain way or to think that the cold reader has some sort of special ability that allows him to "mysteriously" know things about the subject. Cold reading goes beyond the usual tools of manipulation: suggestion and flattery. In cold reading, salespersons, hypnotists, advertising pros, faith healers, con men, and some therapists bank on their subject's inclination to find more meaning in a situation than there actually is.

I predict that the North Pole will become the Riviera of the North very shortly.

The eskimos will be able to bask in the sun, swim in the pristine waters, frolic with the polar bear and build large casinos.

As the north heats up it will no longer be necessary for the Canadians to travel long distances to bask in the sun of South Florida.

Didn’t the original article regarding the discovery of the “flat topped Volcanoes” etc. the other day state that it was detection of seismic activity in 1999 that caused the curiosity to organize the research in the first place?

With all that frigging volcanic activity going on around there, it's no wonder!

Volcanic eruptions reshape Arctic ocean floor: study
June 25, 2008 | AFP

Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday.

The eruptions -- as big as the one that buried Pompei -- took place in 1999 along the Gakkel Ridge, an underwater mountain chain snaking 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles) from the northern tip of Greenland to Siberia.

Scientists suspected even at the time that a simultaneous series of earthquakes were linked to these volcanic spasms.

But when a team led of scientists led by Robert Sohn of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts finally got a first-ever glimpse of the ocean floor 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) beneath the Arctic pack ice, they were astonished.

What they saw was unmistakable evidence of explosive eruptions rather than the gradual secretion of lava bubbling up from Earth's mantle onto the ocean floor.

From Ohio State University News, Dec 2007...

EARTH'S HEAT ADDS TO CLIMATE CHANGE TO MELT GREENLAND ICE

COLUMBUS , Ohio -- Scientists have discovered what they think may be another reason why Greenland 's ice is melting: a thin spot in Earth's crust is enabling underground magma to heat the ice.

They have found at least one “hotspot” in the northeast corner of Greenland -- just below a site where an ice stream was recently discovered.

The researchers don't yet know how warm the hotspot is. But if it is warm enough to melt the ice above it even a little, it could be lubricating the base of the ice sheet and enabling the ice to slide more rapidly out to sea.
