IraqiBodyCount versus antiwar.com
June 11, 2008 | self

Yesterday I read an op-ed that claimed a million Iraqi dead due to U.S. Invasion. Does anyone find it disturbing that newspapers source their reporting on antiwar.com? And by the way the newspaper and the author of the op-ed confirmed that their source was antiwar.com.

Question to everyone, which source do you consider more accurate or credible?...

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/database/ or http://antiwar.com/casualties/

An antiwar person is a direct offspring of Hitler or Stalin.

Neither. I’m going with the peer-reviewed Lancet’s figure of three million gabillion.

Neither. Iraqbodycount uses newspaper report, which are often incomplete, distorted or flat-out false. antiwar.com is as the name suggests leftwing propaganda crap.

If I were to give you a source: US Military.

Iraq Body Count is as close to accurate as there is.

The anti-war people use the George Soros funded Lancet Report that had been proven bogus. It's not even a count. It's a sample survey that is extrapolated.

If 1 million have been killed that is about 16,000 killed per month. Have you heard reporting ever that 16,000 have been killed in a month, much less every month since the war started.

And for the record, at Iraq Body Count, the coalition forces were responsible for approximately 350 deaths in 2005, 550 deaths in 2006, and some 700 deaths in 2007. The remaining deaths of some 80K are from the insurgency and al-Qaeda.

And yes, it's disturbing that the MSM allows this 1 million deaths to go unchecked. There is no longer professional journalism in the MSM.

" Neither. Iraqbodycount uses newspaper report, which are often incomplete, distorted or flat-out false"

They actually are on the ground and do hospital and morgue counts. From Iraq Body Count the coalition forces were responsible for approximately 350 deaths in 2005, 550 deaths in 2006, and some 700 deaths in 2007. The remaining deaths of some 80K are from the insurgency and al-Qaeda.

All of the body counts have been a propaganda effort by the Left.

Our government does not release a tally of all US soldiers “killed in Iraq”. There are individual death notices (combat, accidental, medical, etc.) around the world.

The Left has padded the numbers again and again (amongst the most obvious example was when they included a woman who died crossing the highway in Kansas).

What is the total number of accidental and medical deaths on bases featuring people who were NOT deployed to Iraq over the past 5 years?

I don’t mean to take away from anyone’s service. I mean to highlight that the media has ALWAYS been running with the Left’s bogus numbers.

The Left declared from the beginning that there would be 25,000-50,000 dead US soldiers (when the body bags start coming home) and 1,000,000 dead Iraq civilians.

How many of the dead civilians were killed by so called insurgent TERRORISTS?

How many dead so called civilians were foreign nationals waging war on Iraqi soil?

How many dead so called civilians were members of the so called insurgency?

Problem is that (recently it changed I think) the Ministry of Health in Iraq, was since the elections under the rule of the Sadrists. Their stated goal is the withdrawal of all coalition troops. There is reason to be very wary of the informations coming from the Iraqi Health ministry 2004-2007.

I trust Iraq Body Count as much as a count can be trusted. Their numbers match up pretty close to the monthly totals that you hear/read about which averages about 1200 per month across the total war.

Iraq Body Count is more reliable. The anti war number is based on the discredited Lancet study of Iraq casualties.

They were terrorists, so, naturally, they had to die.

It's the other way... Iraqbodycount uses the press reports as a basis for their numbers. No surprise their numbers match. Problem is how reliable are the press reports? There were several prominent cases were incidents (severed heads, blindfolded victims) were plainly made up or vastly exaggerated by the media. Morgue statistics also were skewed by the fact that the Health Ministry was run by Sadrists.

They get their count from a number of sources:

"IBC’s documentary evidence is drawn from crosschecked media reports of violent events leading to the death of civilians, or of bodies being found, and is supplemented by the careful review and integration of hospital, morgue, NGO and official figures."

I adressed already what you highlighted in that quote.

media reports (which means Reuters, AP, AFP)=leftist bias,

hospital/morgue/health ministry numbers=Sadrist bias,

NGO (which means mostly HRW,AI etc.)=leftist/Islamist bias

"Official" numbers=depends on what official means. Iraqi health ministry falls out.

Iraqi Defense and Interior ministry and Coalition Forces remain as only official sources.

3 out of 4 of their sources have been repeatedly caught lying, falsifying or otherwise twisting reports and numbers. They cross-quote each other. The Sadrist official is the source for the NGO, the NGO get's quoted by the journalist, etc. etc. a chain of lies. Of course not all of their reports are false. The violence has been bad enough. But I won't trust these sources blindly.

"Iraqi Defense and Interior ministry and Coalition Forces remain as only official sources."

Where so they put the count?

And for the record, Iraq Body Count puts the coalition forces responsible for only about 350 killed in 2005, about 550 killed in 2006, and some 700 filled in 2007.
