One of my fave Dirty Harry quotes:

Chief of Police: “Callahan, there’s a report that you shot an unarmed, naked man and you;re supposed to find the rapist killer, what have you got to say about that?”

Harry callahan: “Well the reason why I shot him was because he was running naked with a knife, all bloodied and had a hard-on...yeah, I shot him alright.’

Clint Eastwood’s best line was about his mule, and how it don’t like people laughing.

SF District Attorney:

“That man had rights!”

Harry:

“Well I’m all broken up about that man’s rights!”

How is going from John Wayne to John Ford a big transformation? And why should Clint Eastwood be the least bit ashamed of Dirty Harry?

I don’t recall which movie this is in but I liked the scene where is in a room with his partner’s wife and she asks why he never put the moves on her. He doesn’t answer.

My favorite line had to be from Sudden Impact. Callahan confronts some hoods in the process of robbing a diner (I may not have the quotes exactly right):

Callahan: Me and my two friends can’t just let you walk out of here.

Hood (nervously): What friends?? I only see you!!

Callahan: Mr. Smith, Mr. Wesson, and Me!!

Of course, right after that comes the famous “Make my Day” line, but for some reason, I like the lines above better.

The Beguiled

HALLIE: Ms. Martha said I should shave you, but I ain't so sure. I don't think the Lord wanted a man's face all smooth like a baby's bottom. That's why he gave them whiskers. Might be a sin to shave that growth off.

McBURNEY: Then don't do it. Sinning oughta be saved for much more important things.

SUDDEN IMPACT: The bad guys flee in terror at the carnival when they see a silouetted Harry with his new .44 automag out and ready for business.

Instead, Eastwood is reconnecting with the surly old gun nut.

The commies at the LA Times believe you should be happy and defenseless when you are going after the scum of society. Maybe Harry could have offered them a welfare check instead?

While I thoroughly enjoy damn near everything Eastwood has ever done, let me put in a plug for a pre-Dirty Harry movie, "Play Misty for Me", that was one scary damn movie, and Jessica Walters was so over-the-top as a crazed stalker of Eastwood's character (radio jock Dave Garver), it was easy to believe that was her natural persona.

Also honorable mention for Eastwood's portrayal of Red Garnett in 'In A Perfect World' with Kevin Costner, I thought that was a powerful, if dark movie, it was excellent.

But -my- favorite lines come from Eastwood's superb 'Unforgiven':

Will Munny(Eastwood): "It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. You take away all he's got...and all he's ever gonna have."
The Schofield Kid(Jaimz Woolvett):"Yeah...well, I guess they had it comin'."
Will Munny: "We all have it comin', Kid."

Clint Eastwood taught me about actors. At one time we had actors who were like their hero characters in the movies. Jimmy Stewart, Audy Murphy, Charleton Heston, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum had personalities that were exactly like they played so they didn't really have to act.

After reading about Eastwood, I always felt he was more at home playing a piano in a jazz club than he was standing in front of a camera.

Eastwood lucked into playing in the Spaghetti movies just like he lucked into playing for his friend Don Seigel.

Although Harry was supposed to use a Smith and Wesson Model 29 .44 Mag, the actual gun used was the Model 57 in .41 Magnum

From the Article:

Andy Robinson, who played the Scorpio killer in “Dirty Harry,” said the movie cut through because of its grim hero and bundled appeal. “It was police thriller, a cowboy western and a horror film, it was all of them yoked together,” Robinson said. “And because of the times it was released in, it became the film that people argued about. Is it fascist? Is it ripe with irony? After that movie I was turned away at auditions for quite a while. A lot of people in Hollywood were angry.”

Although Pauline Kael of the New Yorker praised the film’s styling as “trim, brutal and exciting,” she also called it “a remarkably single-minded attack on liberal values, with each prejudicial detail in place — a kind of hard-hat ‘The Fountainhead.’ “ Critic Roger Ebert wrote, “The movie’s moral position is fascist. No doubt about it.”

Liberals were so upset they even blackballed the ACTOR who appeared in it, even though he was a relatively struggling unknown!

So America LOVED Dirty Harry and the liberal elites thought it was obviously a “fascist” movie and a “single minded attack on liberal values”, what values? allowing murderers to roam the street with impunity??

Correction. The rumor of a .41 magnum is false. The people at Smith and Wesson plus an interview with John Milius stated the Model 29 really was used in the movie.

Little Bill: “I don’t deserve this.”
Munny: “Deserve’s got nothing to do with it”.
Blam.
