McCain VP Search Heads to Alaska
A tipster tells Wizbang's Kevin Aylward that Arthur Culvahouse -- who is heading up McCain's vice presidential search team -- is in Alaska:
...There's only one reason he would be there - to meet with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin about the Vice President position.
This comes on the heels of McCain's Memorial Day weekend barbecue attended by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, former White House budget director Rob Portman, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman. Supposedly that was in informal affair, not a vetting session, but it appears that the VP selection game is very much afoot.
We were on the Palin bandwagon early, and Fred Barnes profiled Palin nearly a year ago. In many ways, Palin is an ideal choice: a governor, a woman, a conservative, a Christian, a budget-cutting fiscal hawk known for opposition to pork-barrel projects.

Lets be honest....her husband, Tom....is a commercial fisherman and would be the least likely individual to enjoy any move to the Naval Observatory. But I could see a radical departure from the press in having a guy like him....telling salty sea stories....from the Alaskan coast...while serving as the VP’s husband in DC.
Politically, selecting Palin would be a smart move on McCain’s part. But is she ready or qualified to take over the Presidency should that be necessary?

Sarah is too good for McInsane...she needs to be governor for a couple terms in Alaska, fight the idiocy of the Polar Bear endangerment, and help lead the Republican party out of the post-McCain era.
Offer her the job with these words, “I need you to personally prioritize, vet, and high pressure stack the Supreme Court with judges who believe solely in strict construction. I will not interfere in any way and will sign a blood oath to back your choices 110%. Other than that, you can define what more you feel you can do...”
I see at least two openings coming between 2009 and 2011.

McCain will be 72 if inaugurated. Fair or not, people are going to look at McCain’s VP selection and wonder if that person is up to being President. How can one make the claim that Obama lacks the depth and experience to be president and then select a running-mate with 18 months experience as a governor?
Which would be about 18 months more than Clinton, Obama, and McCain combined.
So what? The Democratic-controlled Congress is against it, and Sara Palin and all the members of the tribe won't change them.
Will McCain still be at the top of the ticket?

No, I will be voting for McCain. He is a lot better than Hussein or Hitlery! But Sarah P and Bobby J seem to be TRUE conservatives of a new generation and I want them to run their states for a couple of terms, and be strong spokespeople and leaders for us in the coming years.
I don’t like McCain as my first choice, and am afraid of our best potentialities being corrupted by his RINO ways before they get a chance to bloom. :)

And, if that's the sole qualifier, a year and a half more that McCain has, too. But as I asked before, how can McCain make an issue out of Obama's inexperience if his choice as his replacement should something happen to him has even less experience?
Remember also that he went there with Hillary. At the time I said...And keep your enemies closer. Let's see what happens.
Hillary can't change her mind...she's stuck with her Dem enviro nazi "block" and Al Gore.
It's a great opening for McCain to promote "government by (and for) the people" rather than political hacks.
Thanks for responding. My sentiments are like yours with this exception: I’m not smart enough to know what 4 years will bring, or whether McCain will even live them out (probably he will); so I’m of a mind to just go with the very best veep right now — and I am convinced that Sarah is the IT girl. And I know that this IS the kind of year where the variables can make idiots out of us all :)
My thoughts; I think governors are the best nominees for Presidents...but we need at least a two term governor as President.
One term governor: Jimmy Carter. ‘nuf said.
Mitt Romney, whom I supported, was a one termer in Massachusetts. I think, in retrospect, that perhaps a second term would’ve helped him politically. I supported him because he also had EXTENSIVE private sector experience.
Two term governor: Ronald Reagan...great President, successful politically.
Two term governor: Bill Clinton (whom I detest, but politically he was successful).
Our current President served one full term in Texas, was elected to a second, but didn’t serve it out.
I love Sarah and Bobby, like I said...but I’d love to have them get a solid track record in their states...have to deal with the various unfunded mandates of the Federal government...in a word, come to D.C. with a head toward making Washington LESS intrusive on the states.
McCain, a creature of legislative body, is going to be in for a rude awakening when he gets into the Oval Office. He won’t have a body of colleagues...instead, the people who he is used to working with “across the aisle” will see him as the Enemy. And he hasn’t made a ton of friends on his own side.
It’ll be interesting.
Neither Jindal nor Palin are seasoned enough. Too young. Let them build a record of success as governors, and then we can talk about national ambitions.
I have no problem with Palin - I like her, in fact. She just isn’t ready for the national stage yet.
