Subway, the sandwich restaurant, wants to hear your child's story – unless he or she is homeschooled.
The national chain's "Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest" offers prizes and a chance to be published on the Subway website and in Scholastic's "Parent & Child" magazine but specifically excludes homeschoolers:
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied (sic) States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.
Subway's website promotion not only misspells "United" States, but offers the grand prize winner a "Scholastic Gift Bastket (sic) for your home."
The 2007 winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was Evan O'Dorney, a 13-year old homeschool student from Danville, Calif.

This is akin to a gaffe I observed in a Target store in Northwest Indiana, just south of Gary, Indiana.
The Community Service Bulletin Board in the store’s foyer posted a picture of the store manager delivering a grant to a group identified as the “Gary Literacy Calition.”
The UNTIED STATES are located right next to VENZUELA.
Sent an email, also. Their decision was unkind and specific in action. Shame on the whole bunch at corporate headquarters.
Do they exclude homeschooled troops? Just wondering.
I just went there and it still says UNTIED STATES. It's at the very bottom in the green part of the page. Too funny!
No, down at the bottom it still says “Untied States”
Remember who owns Subways. People from India
You think their nuts what?
Yeah, we don’t want anyone around here who likes Subway sandwiches!! Git out! Now!
LOL!!!
I’m a homeschool parent who really is going to boycott Subway, the doofuses.
Right!
Subway is one of the few restaurants you will see catering to the troops in Iraq.
Our troops can take care of themselves. But messing with the minds of children is far more dangerous and sinister!
No more Subway for me.
Maybe, just maybe Subway wanted an incentive for public schools as a good thing?
Face it, how hard is it for a homeschool curriculum to incorporate an extremely narrow focus, such as when some of them focus on spelling bee competition?
I really don’t understand why homeschoolers get any satisfaction from competing with public school programs since homeschool is essentially the same as being tutored.
I think they rescinded their policy of asking for high school transcripts when ordering a sandwich.
A public school child could get additional "tutoring" time in spelling if needed.
Instead of trying to remove the winning competition why not up the bar for the other contestants?
I’m going to wait and see what their reason was. Once Subway realizes they have offended a lot of customers they may want to make it right.
Thanks for the link.
“UNTIED STATES” - Maybe that’s the country with 57 states that Obama was talking about?
Oh, yeah, Ed Zachary, the famous eggsistentialist.
I think they have a right to limit their contest however these choose. It could be that homeschoolers would be considered to have an unfair advantage, after all.
It sounds to me, from his many replies, like mrhansen is Indian and works for Subway, or owns a subway greasy joint.
