CNN correspondent Carol Costello compared Cindy McCain to a "Stepford Wife" due to her "low key" role in her husbands campaign so far, in a segment on Wednesdays "The Situation Room." Costello, detailing Mrs. McCains recent photo spread in Vogue magazine, stated the feature "projects an image quite unlike the Cindy McCain we see on the trail," and a talking head described this "Cindy McCain we see" as "low key... taking the traditional role of standing by her husband's side at events." Costello then quipped, "A role critics say makes Mrs. McCain look like -- well, Glenn Close in the movie The Stepford Wives." [audio available here]
On the other hand, Costello described Michelle Obamas Vogue spread more glowingly: "...Michelle Obama chose a traditional black dress with pearl earrings for her Vogue spread. As The Washington Post described it, it was if Michelle Obama was saying 'I am not some scary other.... I am Camelot with a tan.'"
Twice in her report, Costello emphasized that most people "don't really know much about Cindy McCain," except that shes "really, really rich." After making this point the second time, Costello continued by bringing up the issue of Mrs. McCains tax returns. "What voters do know about her -- well, she's enormously wealthy, and she says she won't release her tax returns ever -- which says to voters, you're not one of us -- hence Vogue and the jeans."
Costello followed this portrayal of Cindy McCain by comparing it to Michelle Obamas Vogue spread. "Interestingly, while Cindy McCain chose jeans for her Vogue spread, her likely competitor, Michelle Obama, chose a traditional black dress with pearl earrings for her Vogue spread. As The Washington Post described it, it was if Michelle Obama was saying 'I am not some scary other.... I am Camelot with a tan.'" The Washington Post quotation came from a May 18 piece by Robin Givhan which described the two Vogue features. In her article, Givhan also used the "Stepford wife" term.
Lets get this straight: Mrs. McCains refusal to release her tax returns makes her some kind of elitist, but Michelle Obama, the millionaire, wearing a "traditional black dress with pearl earrings" is an attempt to connect with average voters? As if we needed another indication that CNN leans towards the Obamas.
The full transcript of Carol Costellos segment, which first ran at the end of the 6 pm hour of Wednesdays "The Situation Room:"
WOLF BLITZER: John McCain's wife Cindy is taking center stage in a whole new way. She's featured in a spread in Vogue magazine -- a move possibly aimed at a very specific goal. Let's go back to Carol. She's looking at this story for us. What are you seeing, Carol? What are you hearing?
CAROL COSTELLO, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Wolf, you know, most of us don't really know much about Cindy McCain, except she's really, really rich. But if you take a peak at Vogue magazine, you may get a more well-rounded view.
COSTELLO (voice-over): Ooh la-la -- Cindy McCain in Vogue magazine looks spectacular, lounging at her seaside condo, sans John McCain -- feet bare, wearing size zero jeans. She projects an image quite unlike the Cindy McCain we see on the campaign trail.
SUSAN MACMANUS, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA: So far, Cindy McCain has been low-key. She's been sort of taking the traditional role of standing by her side -- her husband's side at events and clapping and smiling and being supportive of her husband.
COSTELLO: A role critics say makes Mrs. McCain look like -- well, Glenn Close in the movie 'The Stepford Wives.'
GLENN CLOSE (from "THE STEPFORD WIVES"): Well, that's all marvelous.
GLORIA ROEMER, REPUBLICAN CONSULTANT: Well, you know, there's that saying that's been going on for years, you know, don't hate me because I'm beautiful. And that may apply here, because, you know, she is very attractive. You know, she can't help it.
COSTELLO: Roemer says Mrs. McCain's exterior belies who she really is. Mrs. McCain isn't perfect. She suffered a stroke four years ago and worked hard to overcome its affects. She donates tons of time and money to charitable causes. What voters do know about her -- well, she's enormously wealthy, and she says she won't release her tax returns ever -- which says to voters, you're not one of us -- hence Vogue and the jeans.
MACMANUS: Jeans are as all-American as apple pie, and in the fashion world, no matter what they look like, they're in fashion, and so it's no surprise that Cindy McCain would choose a spread with jeans and a nice shirt.
COSTELLO: Interestingly, while Cindy McCain chose jeans for her Vogue spread, her likely competitor, Michelle Obama, chose a traditional black dress with pearl earrings for her Vogue spread. As The Washington Post described it, it was if Michelle Obama was saying 'I am not some scary other.... I am Camelot with a tan.' Whether these images will sway voters one way or another remains to be seen. But we're still in the 'getting to know you' stage.
COSTELLO (on-camera): And, in short, expect both would-be First Ladies to be much more visible in the near future, so you can get to know them -- Wolf.
BLITZER: All right, thanks very much. I'm looking forward to reading that article and seeing the pictures. Carol, see you tomorrow.
Typical cheap shot from spineless leftists in the MSM.
Here’s the question I’d love to see someone pose to Carol Costello on live TV:
“Carol, you assert that unnamed ‘critics’ are describing Cindy McCain as a ‘Stepford Wife’ — WHO is saying such at thing? Please describe the source(s) and context and justification to support your assertion.”
I suspect that Carol Costello would sputter and babble and be helpless b/c said ‘critics’ are the suppliers of liberal talking points emails such as MoveOn.org and MediaMatters. I am sure that MSM twits like Carol Costello get all sorts of such emailed talking points every day, and she was just spouting what some leftist a-hole told her to say.
Just a pillbox hat away from Bouvier? NOT!
Yup...she’s a drug addict who ripped off pills from a clinic, then ruined the person who tattled on her.
Plus, she committed adultery with McCain when he was married to his first wife...the one that raised his kids when he was in a POW camp, fought fiercely for the POW’s and then was in a horrible accident.
What happened to conservatives believing people had to have higher moral standards than pill-popping, thieving adulteresses???
I don’t get it...it’s like we dare not voice Truth anymore.
Yech.
Ed
Barak Obama had an affair too?
I hadn’t heard that...
Ed
Let’s see, would I rather have the stepford wife or the black panther wife.... hmmmmm....
Her addiction to pain pills does not bother me. A lot of good people go through a lot of pain and can’t handle it and abuse medication. This isn’t the same as a heroin junky in my opinion.
I have to say it does bother me about how they first met. I would like to hear more though because I know these things can be distorted. For instance, the story of Newt Gingrich giving his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital is false. Of course the MSM would never actually report that is false.
I thought it was a beautiful, very relaxed picture. These women are jealous because she wears a size zero jean!! LOL.
I agree. We’ll be getting two for one for POTUS if they get elected. She’s got a mean face...
Jackie was one classy lady. Too bad she got mixed up with that clan.
Was Obama unfaithful to her? I hadn’t heard that one. Any links to that?
Exactly. She seems to have put that behind her. We need to be careful what we say about people because most folks have something in their pasts that you wouldn’t want listed in a newspaper. We need grace for people.
Nobody knows what another person goes through. We need to have some grace here for people who have had such pain they needed such medications. She seems to have put that behind her. People are NOT perfect and many of us here have things in our past that we aren’t exactly proud of.
We got the PC police roaming the land, silencing anyone who dares speak out. These people have infected the entire process with their PC cancer.
Are you speaking of that guy and Obama on YouTube?
. . .of what NOT to emulate!
Admittedly, I love Madonna too.
Yeah, well Michelle looks likw James.
It’s been said Jackie one-upped her dictatorial father-in-law.
She remarked she was going to write children’s books—— mentioning certain titles-—which were put-downs Joe Kennedy used, to throw his weight around.
One Jackie mentioned was “The Donkey Who Couldn’t Fight His Way Out of a Telephone Booth.”
Later Joe K picked up the tab for the pricey designer outfits Jackie wore in the WH.
McCain’s pals in the media turning on him? Im shocked!
Good for her! A little blackmail never hurt Joe. He was probably used to it, LOL.
I seldom make long comments on the threads, but when I do I try to do it with reason and some facts to back me up. I am a graphic artist and mostly stick to that.
I also am not PC Police. I am a Catholic who has upheld the values of my faith.
In my comments I did not deny bad behavior [sins, I call them] on the part of anyone. BUT, nowhere in this thread did I see anyone telling people they couldn't voice the truth.
I also voiced the truth when I cited good things that Cindy McCain has done and posted links.
Now, as a good Conservative Christian, I don't believe there is anything wrong in also telling the good things a fallible person has done. How is that wrong? Did it keep anyone else from stating their views?
John McCain is a flawed person, he caroused and had many affairs before he met Cindy in 1979.
I, also, was a great admirer of Jackie Kennedy and loved the whole Camelot idea. Years later we found out it was a sham.
I still liked Jackie, a Catholic, but she spent the last years of her life in an illicit love affair with diamond dealer and industrialist, Maurice Templesman, who was still married.
I am not meaning to offend anyone on this thread, that is not my nature. I try to get along and I don't call people names. We all have our own views about things and I respect that.
Also of interest, last evening JimRob posted a thread and he now agrees to support John McCain inspite of 'intense' dislike.
Another off topic tidbit;
Maurice Templesman supposedly is one of the top funders of Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He was in Angola just last week seeking loans for a multimillion dollar diamond deal.
I admit I don't find Blogspots to be the best source of reliable material but there were other sites on Google.
