Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Friday is scheduled to meet with two Republican governors who have been prominently mentioned as potential running mates, according to Republicans familiar with Mr. McCains plan.
Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, and Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, have both accepted invitations to meet with Mr. McCain at his home in Arizona, according to Republican familiars with the decision. One Republican said that Mitt Romney, a former rival of Mr. McCain for the presidential nomination is also expected to visit him this weekend. Mr. Romneys advisers declined to comment.

This is the time to focus on selecting a presidential nominee. Not the VP.
More her actions since becoming elected governor.
Why does every candidate seem to be gay this year?
Crist? Upchuck (from a Florida resident).
Look, if McCain chooses a strong, young conservative VP it would stop some of the damage. A lot of conservatives threatening to sit out are waiting to see whom McCain chooses for VP. They would quietly vote for McCain in the general. And a guy like Sanford completely disagrees with McCain on illegal immigration. If McCain chooses him, there would be concessions on McCain's part.
It’s certainly looking like governors dominate the “short list”. I do have to say, though, that I’m skeptical that this meeting is necessarily what the reporter characterizes it as.
I rather doubt Jindal is being seriously considered. Crist and Romney are more likely candidates, but I wouldn’t necessarily put either near the top of the list. Crist doesn’t bring as much to the ticket as many think, and Romney’s personal problems with McCain probably stand in the way of that match. Pawlenty probably is near the top, but he isn’t even going to the meeting.
As for your four, the only one who I think is getting any consideration is Palin. Thompson and Steele aren’t going to happen, and from what I’ve heard, Sanford is no longer being considered. Palin’s problem, of course, is that she’s from Alaska.
As for Huckabee, as much as I’d like to read something into his exclusion from this meeting, I wouldn’t write him off yet. There are some sources close to McCain saying that he’s actually at the top of the list. I certainly hope not, though, since that would be a disaster.
Kasich might be good, as would his fellow Ohioan, Rob Portman. But I forget which pundit made a good point saying Portman was OMB chief in the Bush admin. and anyone even remotely connected with Bush probably could not be considered. Pretty sad.
When is the time? Seriously, when does this info normally come out in the election cycle?
CRIST!!!?????
YIKES, none of the above!!
I’m still waiting for that olive branch from McVain to the conservatives whose votes he claims he needs.
Crist takes an oscillating fan wherever he goes (sweats like Al Gore). I guess he employs a fan handler.
Portman was White House Liason to Congress, then U S Trade Representative and lastly head of the OMB, all under G W Bush. Rule Portman out for the reason you already mentioned. Go John Kasich!
Who is she, James K. Polk?
What have she done in 1.5 years as Governor? C'mon now dirtboy.
In other words, I will take her core values and traits over the experience of the vast majority of politicians nowadays. Experience without values means nothing other than you are a crafty parasite.
“McCain to Meet Possible Running Mates”
Well Ted Kennedy is likely out. I guess that leaves Feingold and Liebermann, maybe Hillary Clinton....maybe throw the right wing extremists a bone and pick Grahamnesty....decisions, decisions....
Is John Kasich on the list or are you dreaming?
I like the guy too....
Like it or not, there is no other GOP candidate. I’m disgusted, but that’s how it is. The three front runners were all weak candidates, in any case.
McCain is horrible and I cannot stand the thought of voting for him. However, I’d be happier if he had somebody good as VP, because he’s in his mid-70s, has had recurrent melanoma, and IMHO may not last out his term. So the VP is important.
I think it should be a governor. Personally, I think Palin would be wonderful.
She recently had her fifth child, a boy who has Down’s Syndrome, but she has the full support of a (non-politician) husband and I think she is conservative enough and has both the smarts and the appeal to gain confidence and win over a lot of voters.
McCain is unlikeable and unpredictable, but that could be an advantage. Osama Obama is obviously going to run a campaign that is simultaneously deceptive and scorched-earth, as he was taught by his mentor, Saul Alinsky, and maybe somebody like McCain is just what is needed to come back against this.
“I have to be honest. Im leaning towards Romney.”
I have to be honest as well. If he picks Romney or (even better) someone more conservative than Mitt, I’d have to consider voting Republican this year.
Hey no matter who McCain selects for VP, Bush will be his running mate.
I have a feeling the ticket balancing isn't going to be geographical this time. The Obama/Hillary wars opened up a major rift in the Dems - a lot of women thought there would finally be female nominee this year. Looks like there will not be - and although Obama will be the first minority nominee, women are a majority. Palin on the ticket could well attract a lot of blue dog types. She also bucked the GOP establishment in Alaska (which needed such), so she will appeal to McCain's self-perceived maverick streak.
Throw in the fact that she is pro-life, pro-gun, pro-spending cuts and young enough to counterbalance McCain's age, and I think it has potential.
