Everything Must Go: The American Conservative Movement, 1980-2008
Human Events ^ | 5/17/08 | D. R. Tucker

It was fun while it lasted.

The guaranteed election of a non-conservative President on November 4th represents the end of the conservative movement in America. Neither Barack Obama nor John McCain stands for Reagan principles in any way, shape, manner or form—and after twenty years of non-conservative Presidents, it’s obvious that the Reagan era will never, ever return.

The conservative movement has been in the hospital for nearly two decades. Once George H. W. Bush—a good, moral man, but not a true conservative—entered the White House, conservative principles slowly but surely began to leave. Yes, he gave us a victory in the Gulf War and Clarence Thomas, but he also gave us a broken no-new-taxes promise and David Souter. Bush was more Rockefeller than Goldwater, during a time when America and the world needed more of the latter and less of the former.

Bill Clinton replaced Bush in 1993 and, during his eight years in office, stole certain conservative concepts (NAFTA, welfare reform) and destroyed others (judicial restraint, the rule of law). Clinton moved the country in a secular direction, helping to make the 1990s as culturally loose as the 1980s were culturally traditional. Clinton also seemed obsessed with, among other things, promoting the notion that the Reagan era was a fluke, and that (despite his famous 1996 claim) big government was a permanent reality.

As long as I and Rush Limbaugh draw breath...

And myself, wife and 4 kids, along with millions of others here and abroad. Unlike spineless libs, Conservatives do not abandon their convictions under threat and will (eventually) fight for them. God bless The Republic.

I know you’re not a liberal in disguise, but you’re accidentally using the liberal tactic of refusing to distinguish between adult stem cells, which truly work and don’t involve the controversial destruction of embryos, and embryonic stem cells which involve a heated moral debate.

NO, Newt has not joined them. Unless they are calling for the development of clean coal, more nukes, more drilling, and opening ANWR.

Are they doing that?

You need to read Newt’s actual written proposals, not the putrid hillbilly sound bites as vomited by the Neanderthal Newt-haters here on FR.

This fact will save us.

Are you saying that a guy who makes 30 or 40 mil a year, lives like a king, hobnobs with only the rich and famous and lives in a gated enclave with an ocean frontage is out of touch with ‘real life’ Americans?

Oh you class envier you.

Roe v Wade and the NEA preaching secular humanism in the schools is what FORCED religious people to fight back.

Abortion WAS a local issue until Roe v Wade reared its ugly head.

I still have a letter from Goldwater circa 1979 praising the pro-life movement; that was BEFORE he married the liberal Planned Parenthood wife (and before his dotage)

>>>>Now how in the world do we expect to stay in power when we keep alienating group after group?

First off, “staying in power” is not the concern of conservatives. Reducing the size and scope of government is.

And that’s where we’ve been going astray, in the “good” moral directions of the Values Voters, Social Conservatives, Evangelicals, and Monomaniacal Single-Issue Anti-Abortion Party.

Once we set down that “moral” path we began to lose our way from limited government, the rule of law, freedom, and low taxes.

We have lost all those who find the cheap moralizing to be deeply offensive.

And we offend Hispanics because our own alleged leadership does not itself understand the rule of law regarding illegal migration.

How utterly idiotic. Libertinism at its worst. Christianity is the heart and soul of conservatism and if you don’t know THAT you don’t know anything.

So 85% want “gay marriage”? Is that why it was voted down in so many states?

I am not hostile to Limbaugh the media personality, I find him entertaining. It is the presumption that he stands as the true spokesman for conservative orthodoxy that drives me crazy. If there is only one interpretation of conservatism and it is defined by talk radio we are in serious, serious trouble. I listen to Tom Davis, a middle of the road conservative, speak about the problems facing the Republican party and then I hear talk radio argue the exact opposite point of view. Davis says we need to reflect on the war, health care and the economy and come up with a more contemporary message. Talk radio responds by saying liberal, liberal, Jeremiah Wright, liberal.

You’re the kind of person who has led the destruction of conservatism and the Republican Party.

You must go and form your own political party and philosophy.

And whatever it is, it sure ain’t conservatism.

Again, I think Coulter wants to sell books. She says provocative things to get the attention. So, conservatives tend to dismiss her as over the top. The media, on the other hand, identify her as a conservative spokesperson and people like my wife believe that all conservatives are detached from reality.

To keep his voice in the conversation. Period.

BTW, the climate is ALWAYS changing, and always will. Making that statement doesn’t indict anyone.

You need to dig just a few sentences deeper than the standard hillbilly wisdom espoused by many on FR.

The first of course being stem cells. Reagan was a uniter. A leader. Human beings like Rush will never be true leaders when they keep alienating people one by one.

Reagan never compromised on his Pro-Life stance. Rush Limbaugh isn't against stem cell research. He says EMBRYONIC stem cell people made ridiculous promises they couldn't support and blasted anyone proposing the use of stem cells other than embryonic ones.

Rush is a uniter. Look at his audience.

I suggest you reread the US Constitution. Or perhaps, you’re not a Constitutionalist ?

Jesus was a radical, who turfed money-changers out of the Temple and dissed Pharisees. Using Christ as the basis for comservatism is a very dicy proposition, my FRiend, not to mention constitutionally suspect.

Conservatives are having more children than liberals, so that may not be true.

I hope you’re not including me in your Hillbilly description ? You didn’t respond to my posts yesterday that Newt’s goose is cooked - do you really think Newt’s the guy to carry the conservative message in 2008 ? You’re not his campaign manager are you ?
