There's not enough remaining of the Republican party for even the buzzards to pick at. Thank you Rove, Hastard, Lott, Frist and most importantly that most compassionate conservative himself George W. Bush. We gave them both houses of congress and the presidency and what did they give us (conservatives), the coming biggest ass whipping in my lifetime and I'm 61.

Congress’s approval rating is lower than Bush’s.

I agree. Bad campaining by the Republicans. Why on earth would they bring in Cheney to campaign for anyone?? Even in conservative Mississippi.

The Republicans could have won this seat in most years...however, since 2006...it is getting harder and harder.

The War not included, most of that “out-of-control” spending was Bush co-opting Big Democrat issues and making them his own, thus depriving them of a “Big Stick” to use against us.

In 2002 it was “No Child Left Behind”, and in 2004 it was Prescription Drugs.

I don’t like it, but I DO understand the politics of it. Meanwhile, the Repubs in Congress (Frist)were trying to build a non-voter support system like the Democrats have, to insure THEMSELVES of Outside-The-Party power like the Democrats have done.

It failed miserably...

This seat went for Bush over Kerry by over 25 points. Tonight the Dem beat the Republican by 9. This wasn't a bad Republican candidate either. In 4 years we have a 30 point electoral shift. It's very scary.

Cheney wasn't the only Republican to campaign -- Mike Huckabee, Roger Wicker, Trent Lott, Haley Barbour etc all campaigned.

His support in the Senate faded away because he became indefensible.

What Nixon did was not as bad as Clinton and Clinton is loved by many.

I saw one of the ads the Republican ran.

Stupid ad. Trying to tie the dem with Jeremiah Wright. How stupid does he think the voters are? Even had spooky music.

What a stupid politician. He deserved to lose.

The rats like sheep hang together while the GOP all split and try to fight their own fight. We need a leader that can unite us. If it is possible to unite us because it seems to me like it is our nature to be rugged individualists.

Liberate two countries with essentially minimal KIA. Did it ever occur to you that if in a war you miminize collateral damage and civilian casualties, the aftermath might be a bit more difficult. Your understanding of war and the history of war come right from the MSM apparently.

Bush is not blameless.

Nobody said he was blameless, I did not care for his first term steel tariff increase. What I said was that the Dims rallied around the indefensible to avoid taking big losses for their side. The conservative pundits and bloggers like you have allowed Bush's reputation to be torn to shreds often unfairly, hows that working out for you? Not surprisingly to me the GOP voters turned to the center after failing to get defense from the right, you satisfied with the nominee you got hanging Bush out to dry?

Politico Racial politics in Miss. special election

In the run-up to today’s hotly-contested special election in Mississippi’s First District, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has targeted the African-American community with several fliers accusing the Republican party and its nominee, Greg Davis, of racial insensitivity.

The latest direct mail piece accuses Davis, the mayor of the Memphis suburb of Southaven, of attempting to honor Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest with a statue of him in his hometown -- a charge that the Davis campaign vigorously disputes.

And on Sunday, Democratic officials distributed DCCC fliers at African-American churches in the district that accuse Republicans of making it “harder for us to vote – fake phone calls, calls with the wrong election date, uniformed guards at the polls, even people inside the polls challenging each and every vote.”

Democrats also need healthy turnout among the district’s sizable African-American population to win the district. African-Americans comprise over 25 percent of the district, but often don’t turnout in significant numbers.

Why should conservative commentators defend Bush when he doesnt defend himself?

This is the man who invited Teddy Kennedy over to watch a movie when he was calling him a liar and the man who sat back and watched himself get blamed for a Hurricane.

People like Limbaugh and Hannity defended Bush through a lot of things they should have blasted him on.

Yes the media is liberal and has helped destroy the Bush presidency, but the inability of the Bush White House to effectively communicate, fight back, defend itself, is the reason he and the party are in the position they find themselves in. TO suggest this is anyones fault other than Bush is just totally misplaced blame.
