Senate rejects GOP oil drilling plan (GOP measure, defeated Tuesday by a vote of 56-42)

WASHINGTON - The Senate has rejected a Republican energy plan that calls for opening an Alaska wildlife refuge and some offshore waters to oil development. Supporters of the measure couldn't get the needed 60 votes to overcome a Democratic-led filibuster threat.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said more domestic oil production is needed to keep prices in check and to reduce U.S. dependence on oil imports.

Opponents said areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and coastal waters that have been off limits to drilling for 25 years ought to remain that out of bounds to oil companies. The GOP measure, defeated Tuesday by a vote of 56-42, would have allowed coastal states to get a waiver to the offshore drilling ban.

The GOP is broken.

You got that right. There’s nothing we can do about the disaster that will fall on our nation for the next four years. It’s too late.

But it is not too late to start a Conservative Party and create a Party platform of true ideas for reform. Let’s get started.

1. Government expenditures shall not exceed revenues except in time when Congress has declared a state of war with a foreign power.

2. Term limits

3. No candidates who have not spent at least 10 years in the private sector (should apply to university tenured profs, too);

4. Restrict jurisdiction of courts to hear whacko cases and limits on attorneys fees

5. Free trade agreements, but ones that mirror the trade policies of other nations.

6. Secure and militarize the southern border.

7. Energy independence through nuclear power and coal hydrogenation/liquification.

We need YOUNG Congressional candidates in districts we can win on ideas. Give up on the top of the ticket. Give up on the big cities. Go for the suburbs and flyover country. Get a viable Party with representatives on Congress. And, groom the successors. We have to live what we preach.

The Senate action was worth about $3 on the price of NYMEX crude. If it has passed it would have been worth that, but the other way. That is all, and it would fade to a net zero by the end of the trading day.

I don't believe that for a moment. The cartels' greatest fear is that new sources of oil come on line. They will do what is necessary, particularly lowering the price of oil, to make such a scenario less likely. The vote had no effect because the results were known beforehand. If Obama came out and said that we must drill for more oil, the price of crude would plummet.

Bingo! I think it is the #1 issue on most peoples minds. Unfortunately, the Dems are going to own this one. Partly because the Republicans have no ba**s, and partly because the general public believe the Dems lies about the evil oil companies. If the Republicans really wanted it they would need a mass advertising campaign both on TV and print which explained basic supply and demand curves and what the Dems policies will do to this country. Too bad this will never happen.

I'm willing to bet that that is PRECISELY what John McCain did on this one too! I think that's a safe bet since the GOP's Presidential nominee is such a believer in global warming and opposed drilling ANWR (just check the RNC's current website).
