Maine's a gorgeous state and a beautiful place to live. If you have money at least.

I spent 7 years there and met tons of Navy people from Brunswick when I lived in Auburn. I'd hear all these great stories about the NAS in Rota, Spain.

Maine, however, is tragically flawed. Folks in the military may not notice it so much as civilians, but the state will tax you and your employer until you both bleed from the ears. There is a reason that industry and business has fled from the Pine Tree State.

I'm very happy to be on the New Hampshire side of the border.

Maine is New England's own little piece of Appalachian poverty. Tar paper shacks and all. It looks very quaint driving through in a car, but I wouldn't want my children to grow up there. Well, maybe in Falmouth Foreside or Cape Elizabeth...

It's a nice place to visit, but...
