McCain Breaks with Bush on Climate Change

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) speaks to employees about alternative energy sources at the Vestas Wind Technology plant in Portland, Oregon May 12, 2008. (Reuters)

Updated 4:40 p.m. By Juliet Eilperin PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) outlined his proposal to address climate change this morning, offering plans that would go beyond President Bush's but fall short of the bipartisan bill headed for a Senate vote next month.

You and I had opposite reactions. When I read,

"McCain also emphasized the need to build more nuclear power plants in order to reduce the nation's overall emissions, saying, "here we have a known, proven energy source that requires exactly zero emissions ... It doesn't take a leap in logic to conclude that if we want to arrest global warming, then nuclear energy is a powerful ally in that cause."

I knew McCain was the right man for the job. A nuclear powered electric grid, and transportation that makes use of that grid IS our way out of foreign dependency.

I am beginning to suspect that we are infiltrated by a bunch of RINO'S. So McCain says that he is going to put windmills over the country and God knows what else. But he is still better than Hillary and out classes Obama at every turn. No matter what McCain tries to do it has to go before congress. Perhaps we should be stacking congress with Republicans before we elect a Donk.

“I actually do believe that McCain is going to win the election in November. I also believe that he’ll probably end up being an even worse President than Bush is.”

That would be hard. Right about now, I’m thinking Bush is approaching Carter’s previously unassailable position in the “I sucked as a President” sweepstakes.

What’s going on?????

That's one of the easier questions to answer here.

As much as I disagree with most of what Dick Morris says, he hit the 'nail on the head' when he stated (paraphrasing) a couple of years ago that the Republican Party was 'going out of business' due to demographic changes. He cites the birth rate of blacks, Hispanics and muslims (which is much higher than the white birth rate) with uncontrolled immigration as the 'exclamation point'.

The hugh demographic changes in this country make it harder and harder every day for a true conservative candidate like the Gipper (or even an imitation conservative) to ever emerge nationally again.

For him before he was against him. A tiresome trend in DC politics.

I think that McCain is making a campaign promise that he has no capability or intention of carrying out. The Republican caucus in the Senate met over this a month ago and came out solidly against Cap & Trade.

I admit that McCain plus the 'Rats can rule all, but I really think that McCain knows that his own side won't let him carry out this extreme foolishness. So I think that he's being very political here. He's staking out a non-conservative position a week after he promised to appoint very conservative judges.

I too am waiting on McCain’s VP choice.

As it stands now, I could not vote for him even if drunk.

I keep on hoping, wishing that this is all some Rove-esque scheme: nominate a Republican the dems/media can barely even attack; let Obama and Hillary tear each other to shreds for eight months till they’re both mortally wounded; pick an actual conservative at the convention and kick McCain to the curb where he belongs; win the election.

I can dream can’t I.

I agree with you. He has lost me too.

I live in Oregon and to have that speech delivered here is just icing on the cake for my decision.

Bob Barr just announced that he will run as a Libertarian candidate for President.

Conservatives will be able to have influence over a President McCain, but will have none over a Democrat President.
Why will conservatives have any influence over McCain? If he gets elected it will be because he has taken enough of the moderate Democratic votes he is campaigning for. Placating Conservatives will only alienate an important part of his centrist base.

McCain is an OLD man who is "out of touch".

He doesn't have a clue.

I just don’t see the point in voting to encourage the GOP even further leftward.

I am voting because of our men & women in uniform currently dying in 2 wars that provides me that gift to do so.

Alan Keyes, a fine Reagan Conservative, will be on the ballot this year.

Oh, please. Not only is he a proven loser, but he won't be on the ballot in many states.

How many times do you want to hit yourself in the head with a hammer before you decide it's enough?
